Had to Google as I didn't know the name. Eastend gangster and writer.

Not surprising.

[Gangster Dave Courtney was battling cancer before
he was found dead from a gunshot wound
with a pillow over his face.
The 64-year-old hardman - who was the inspiration
for Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels' memorable
Little Chris enforcer - was found dead in his
famous Camelot Castle pad yesterday.
Courtney had been in high spirits after
watching a football match with friends and drinking into
the earlier hours of Sunday morning. ]

Hurting people for most of his life then ending his own suffering quickly because he didn't want to be in pain .

I'd never judge anyone for choosing euthanasia tbf, I think that's everyone's right when diagnosed with a terminal condition, especially a painful/degenerative one, but there is a terrible irony about this particular case that makes the term "brave" a very strange one to use. At least it would be. Given the source, not so much.
