“Friends” star Matthew Perry died of an apparent drowning on Saturday, TMZ reported.

He was 54 years old.

The actor was found Saturday at a home in the Los Angeles area, law enforcement sources told the outlet.

First responders had received a call to the property for a person suffering cardiac arrest.

Perry rose to fame playing fan-favorite Chandler for 10 seasons on the immensely popular ’90s Sitcom “Friends.”

He had a long history of drug and alcohol abuse, which he has been candid about since getting sober, opening up about his addictions in a memoir he published last year.

Jeez that's insane to me. I haven't properly watched Friends in years and tbh had kind of dismissed it as younger me having bad taste in comedy, but yeah this actually leaves me kind of sad. Chandler dead. Unreal.

From what I've read he was apparently found in a jacuzzi, possible heart attack (which may not have been fatal, which is why cause of death would be drowning).

Very sad, 54 is no age at all really.

…there are some celebrity deaths that totally stun you, so devastating for all who knew and loved him……

…it’s said that the last post that he shared in social media was a photo of himself in a pool, with the words….

“Oh, so warm water swirling around makes you feel good? I’m Mattman,” said the caption.

…one of his own quotes from his book….

“If I had to do it all over again, would I still audition for Friends? You bet your ass I would. Would I drink again? You bet your ass I would. If I didn’t have alcohol to soothe my nerves and help me have fun, I would have leaped off a tall building sometime in my twenties.”

…maybe not a long life but a life lived his way…

He had a lot of issues.

Yes, sad to say it was a tragedy about to happen, ticking away in the background. :(

I don't think it's a good thing for anyone in their 50s to go on a sudden health trip, too much exercise at that age not good, considering all the health and addiction issues he'd had.

RIP.

Gutted, I was just watching the Friends reunion the other day and it was sad how terrified he said he always felt that people wouldn't laugh at his jokes and how much he needed that validation, especially knowing all the struggles he was going through during filming. It's amazing how he was still able to perform that role so perfectly. I watched him quite closely during the Reunion because of that and you could see the effects of those problems he'd had but it was also really touching how happy he was to see Matt Le Blanc again and how he talked about his relationship with the others

Even now Friends is such a comforting TV show for me and something I could still watch and laugh at any time. I'm glad he started to appreciate how massive his legacy was and how much that show meant to people

This is so tragic....out of all of them he was the one who seemed to struggle with the fame.
Hate American Sitcoms but Friends was iconic and I could watch them over and over again....
He never looked well...his weight gain and he looked haggered and we all know why, because of his battle with drink and drugs that finally took its toll...
I never thought it was going to be a happy ending for him...even in the reunion last year he was quiet and withdrawn.

So so sad...I seriously have a tear in my eye.

I agree it feels like I lost someone. Don't think I've cried like I did this morning since Robin Williams. It will be so hard. I just saw the clip at the reunion where Matthew says that whenever they see eachother at events they all immediately apologised to the other person because they just knew they would spend the rest of the evening with eachother only! The rest of the cast agreed and the girls got emotional.

Found out earlier today, I'm utterly devastated. I'm a big friends fan....and I still watch the repeats on TV . I know he had his problems and issues, but I kept hoping he'd get better. Very sad news.

I remember watching the friends reunion, and seeing how unwell he looked, and how worried I felt. I was glad they did the reunion when they did ,I had a feeling we wouldn't see all 6 of them together like that again...which added that sense of poignancy.

It's awful that because his health deteriorated so much , it's like people were expecting it . How bad is that ! ....the guy was only 54 ...I don't care what anyone says it's still a huge blow to hear he's died , like I said I know he had his problems. But still .

Rewatching friends will never be the same again , Matthew Perry was talented, and he made us laugh and he entertained us all R.I.P.

In a joint statement, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer and Lisa Kudrow said it was an "unfathomable loss".

The Friends actor was reportedly found unresponsive in a hot tub at his house on Saturday.

Perry's post-mortem examination was inconclusive.

Officials are awaiting the results of toxicology tests.

"We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew," the Friends cast said in a joint statement released to People magazine on Monday.

"We were more than just castmates. We are a family. There is so much to say, but right now we're going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss. In time we will say more, as and when we are able.

"For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty's family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world."

Whether there's drugs involved or not an whether they're prescription or not, I reckon the ultimate reason is probably just that he's suffered some sort of adverse health event (heart attack, stroke, etc.), passed out and slipped under the water. Really a tragic way to go, and also a cautionary tale for why you shouldn't go solo in water deep enough to slip under and drown, especially over a certain age (probably about 50). He may well not have died if the same thing had happened "on dry land", so to speak, or if there'd been someone with him to stop him going under the water.

His story is a very sad one really. Especially as, despite all of those demons and addictions, it seems he was totally harmless to everyone but himself. Which is very different to a lot of the "celebrities with demons" stories.

Apparently he had major health problems a few years ago and was given something like 5% odds of survival, including a cardiac arrest and needing his heart to be restarted. Unfortunately that almost always causes permanent damage to the heart so adding to the likelihood that he may have had a heart attack in the hot tub.

…it’s been humming around in my head for a few days because I was thinking how much some of the lyrics of Friends feel so personal for Matthew Perry as well…

No one could ever know me
No one could ever see me
Seems you're the only one who knows
What it's like to be me
Someone to face the day with
Make it through all the rest with
Someone I'll always laugh with
Even at my worst, I'm best with you, yeah
It's like you're always stuck in second gear
When it hasn't been your day, your week, your month
Or even your year
I'll be there for you
(When the rain starts to pour)
I'll be there for you
(Like I've been there before)
I'll be there for you
('Cause you're there for me too)

..I’m finding it incredibly emotional to listen to…💔…but bittersweet in what he’s said what Friends meant to his life and how it ‘saved him’ in his younger days….

Feel gutted hearing this. Matthew Perry has always been open talking about his struggles with addiction and he apparently was receiving ketamine infusion therapy to treat his depression but they found high levels in his system so he must’ve decided to use it recreationally.

Regardless of what’s happened it hasn’t tainted my view of him. He was a brilliant actor and always seemed to be quite a genuine, funny and grounded person in real life. It’s sad that he had so many struggles throughout his life but he bought a lot of joy and happiness to so many people who watched Friends, including myself.

RIP

Cocain and ketamine (you'll hear them call it Ket or "K") are very, very commonly used by UK teens/20-somethings as recreational drugs these days. It's quite alarming. They talk about it as casually as we talked about weed in my day . Then again there was also heavy MDMA use in my day which there seems to be a bit less of these days.

But yes, as above it can also be prescribed.

It sounds like he was probably using it off-prescription in this case, though. And yeah ketamine + a heart problem + a hot tub dilating the blood vessels... are not a good recipe.

People took ket a lot when I was younger....it came after E's when people want more of a downer than an upper. From what I hear now from younger friends MDMA is still popular....but it's more pure than Ectasy was.

It's strange but some people are fit as fiddles in their late 70s, even running marathons.

I had a notification on my phone it's 7 years since George Michael died at just 53. I looked up what he died of and he had so many health problems, from heart ailments to other diseases. He was worn out at 53.

George Michael was on GHB constantly and smoking both crystal meth and crack. It would have been more surprising if his heart WASN'T absolutely ****ed at 53.

Authorities say from September to October 2023, Perry purchased 20 vials of ketamine for $55,000 (£42,800).

The purchases led Dr Plasencia, one of those charged in Perry's death, to write in a text message, "I wonder how much this moron will pay" in reference to the actor.

Investigators are saying Plasencia wrote in text messages that he wanted to be Perry's "go-to for drugs".

Authorities are explaining that as a doctor, Plasencia knew the dangers of the drugs he was taking and even witnessed Perry "freeze up" and saw his blood pressure spike while administering the drugs during one occasion. But authorities say the doctor still left behind vials of the drug for his assistant to administer.

His official doctor did an infusion on that drug,
to help with his depression.

So he knew how relaxed it made him.

But then Evil dealers/doctors bought it for $12
took it to his door ready to be injected
but charged him $2,000 for that cheap gear.

Doctor pleads guilty in connection with death of Friends star Matthew Perry…

One of two doctors charged in connection with actor Matthew Perry’s death has pleaded guilty in a federal court in Los Angeles, after reaching a deal with prosecutors.

Mark Chavez, a doctor from San Diego, formally admitted conspiring to distribute the surgical anaesthetic ketamine during a change-of-plea hearing on Wednesday.

The 54-year-old is the third person to accept charges following the death of Friends star Perry, who died on October 28 last year from the “acute effects of ketamine” at the age of 54.

US District Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett scheduled a sentence hearing for April 2 2025.

He is facing a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Chavez, who is free on a 50,000 dollar (£37,600) bond, exited the courtroom with his lawyer Matthew Binninger.

In comments made to reporters outside court, Mr Binninger said that Chavez had “absolutely” shown remorse for his actions.

“(He has) accepted responsibility, plead guilty, admitted a lot of facts on record, he’s cooperating with the government, he has already started the process of surrendering his medical licence.

“He is taking this incredibly seriously.”

In his plea agreement, Chavez admitted to selling ketamine to another doctor, Salvador Plasencia, from Santa Monica, having diverted it from his former ketamine clinic.

In total, he transferred 22 viles of liquid ketamine and nine ketamine lozenges to Plasencia who allegedly sold them to Perry, the court heard.

Plasencia is set to face a trial on March 4 next year, after allegedly using Perry’s live-in assistant Kenneth Iwamasa to distribute ketamine to the actor from September to October last year for 55,000 dollars (£43,000).

Perry had been seeking treatment for depression and anxiety when he became addicted to intravenous ketamine last autumn.

According to the initial indictment, Plasencia is said to have conspired with fellow doctor Chavez to supply Perry with large amounts of ketamine, writing in a message: “I wonder how much this moron will pay” and “let’s find out”.

Plasencia will stand trial alongside Jasveen Sangha – an alleged drug dealer named by authorities as “the ketamine queen” – who is said to have sold ketamine to Perry for 11,000 dollars (£8,553) in cash.

The ketamine supplied by Sangha was ultimately the dose that took Perry’s life, a Drug Enforcement Administrator previously claimed.

Plasencia is facing a maximum sentence of 120 years in federal prison, while Sangha is facing life imprisonment.

During a previous court appearance, Plasencia denied conspiracy to distribute ketamine; seven counts of distribution of ketamine and two charges related to allegations he falsified documents during the investigation into Perry’s death.

Sangha also plead not guilty to conspiracy to distribute ketamine; maintaining a drug-involved premises; possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine; possession with intent to distribute ketamine and five counts of distribution of ketamine.

Perry, who played Chandler Bing in hit US sitcom Friends, died after receiving several injections of ketamine from his live-in assistant Iwamasa.

Iwamasa plead guilty on August 7 to conspiring to distribute ketamine causing death – admitting to “repeatedly injecting Perry with ketamine without medical training”.

His sentencing has been set for November 6.

During the last few weeks of his life, Perry “turned to street dealer” Erik Fleming who is said to have sourced ketamine from Sangha.

Fleming pleaded guilty on August 8 to conspiracy to distribute ketamine and distribution of ketamine resulting in death.

He is set to be sentenced on October 30.

Plasencia is currently on release after posting a 100,000 dollar (£78,000) bond, while a judge denied bond for Sangha.
