The UK is the only country they are called Walkers (that I’m aware of). They are called Lays in most parts of the world I’ve been to. I’d assume something to do with the trademark name already being used, similar to Burger King being called Hungry Jacks in Australia.
Walkers was acquired by the same company that owns Lays (I think PepsiCo) in the 80s or 70s, and rightly opted not to change the name for British consumers. But it's always been Walkers in the UK.
