Its more to do with hiw you talk to people..

If someone says to you

"How are you today"

You wouldn't turn round and say "spikey"

If you were spikey its less of a feeling and more of a reaction, cause your spikiness would turn round and tell them to "go away, mind your own business" in some sort of way that would put the other person down, like adding a "you nosey ****" to the end of that sentence.
