I was just thinking that .. he looked ‘ropey’ when it was first released in the 80’s ?

Gutted, one of my favourite bands. Wish I'd been able to see him live but he has been hanging on for a number of years now
Will be having a Pogues binge this evening

Oh the words that he spoke
Seemed the wisest of philosophies
There's nothing ever gained
By a wet thing called a tear
When the world is too dark
And I need the light inside of me
I'll walk into a bar
And drink fifteen pints of beer

Very sad. I knew when the hospital decided to let him go home, it was to die. He looked so ill in his last photo. :(
He had a booze filled life which I am certain didn't help his health in later years. I'll never forget a time he rolled up on a TV chat show with a jug of Vodka that looked like water but obviously wasn't.
RIP. :(

Just like Irish-England legend Eoin Morgan :smug:
The Irish definitely do pubs and music right tbf, the Pogues were a big blend of English and Irish
Oof I even forgot this one

And this even though it wasn't sang by Shane, he was a man you don't meet every day

I read this a few years ago and would recommend it to anyone, fascinating read but shows how messed up the band was in its own wonderful way. It's written by their accordion player

…Shane MacGowan’s funeral prosession with many people lining the streets to see his final journey and the mass was streamed to the public…among those contributing to the service and speaking were Johnny Depp and Bob Geldoff…

I'm a bit shocked he was cremated, and not buried.

No need to take offence to the word ‘******’
Readers respond to Nick Cave’s claim that the Fairytale of New York has been mutilated by BBC censorship

Young people who are offended by contemporary homophobic associations of the word “******” may be unaware that in old Irish slang “******” means a bundle of sticks, and hence a lazy person (Nick Cave accuses BBC of ‘mutilating’ Fairytale of New York, 1 December)). Strange that the BBC protects the sensibilities of those who feel offended by their own misunderstanding and find offence where none was intended.
It was good to read Nick Cave’s thoughtful comments about the fragile artistic integrity of this Christmas song enjoyed and played worldwide, whose emotional impact derives partly from its down to earth depiction of love. Surely we all sometimes hate those we love, and in my experience acknowledging the inevitable hating moments only deepens and enhances the love I feel for my partner.
Thank you, Laura Snapes, for including Shane MacGowan’s comment that he found censorship of the song to be “ridiculous” – a concise summary of a complex topic.
I've just been catching up on the funeral, some wonderful moments and performances

I didn't realise his faith was actually strong given he led one of the most irreligious lives possible :joker:

…I watched vids on YouTube for much of the evening yesterday and it was incredibly touching…it really was like a state funeral, I hadn’t realised how lived he was by the people of Ireland…he also had an interest in Buddhism, I believe…as well as being christened into the Catholic faith and he definitely seemed to have his own ‘unplugged version’ of religion…which is something that many people have…he’s said to have believed in the love of Jesus as opposed to the wrath of God…and they are both the same and yet entirely different also….
…he apparently was given 6 months to live every year by medical people since he was 19yrs old…and he died at 65yrs old, so well done Shane……
