two big tournaments going on right now as we speak
Africa Cup, hosted in Ivory Coast
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Africa_Cup_of_Nations
Asia Cup, hosted in Qatar
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_AFC_Asian_Cup
Egypt narrowly escaping from a upset, penalty by Salah in 90+7 saving a point for them
Japan meanwhile beginning their asia cup with a 4-2 over Vietnam, among goalscorers also Minamino, and new Feyenoord star Ueda
solid 3-0 win for hosts Qatar, goalscorers 2x Afif and 1x Almoez Ali over Lebanon
2-0 win for Australia over India, goalscorers were Jordan Bos and Jackson Irvine
Which countries have the players of interest ?
I know Salah plays for Egypt but the rest are a bit sketchy ..
Yves Bissouma - plays for Mali ( born in Ivory Coast apparently though ?)
Son ?
Pape Sarr ?

I watched a bit of the game last night where Cape Verde stunned Ghana with a last minute winner. Afcon is quite good at producing some shocks
The atmosphere seems pretty dead though, thought African football crowds were normally really lively

Can’t say I take much notice of this competition though over the years I recall that some teams were really skilful .. Morocco / Algeria / Egypt etc
Have things changed and are they all 6’ athletes ?

Yes Cape Verde, the team of Fortuna Sittard player Deroy Duarte
we miss him now at our midfield because of this

I want Japan to win the Asian Cup, or South Korea.
And I want Egypt to win the AFCON, I mean the country put Hollywood in their place over the Cleopatra Documentary, and doubled down on it when confronted by the weirdos, that imo deserves a reward of a big kind.
It's a shame about Salah's injury.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!
Jordan knocks out Iraq 3-2 to make the quarter finals after 1-2 behind, then vs 10 Iraqi's, scoring two crucial goals in 90+4 and 90+7

Jordan in the final, 2-0 win over South Korea :o
And Qatar in the final :hello:
Qatar win the Asian cup with three penalties in the final :joker:
Ivory Coast win Afcon despite sacking their manager after the group stage where they fluked progression
Not sure either tournament has delivered much

Ivory Coast has to be one of the best turnarounds in form that I've seen in awhile on Football.
And tbf Qatar did well, as I had at least three different countries that I thought would win before thinking of Qatar.
i didn't watch any of either competition. They just didn't grab my interest. There is more than enough domestic football to satisfy me

Look at Argentina in the group stages of the World Cup, lost to Saudi, biggest upset in World Cup history, just about got through their group, then went on to win the whole thing. Pretty much what Ivory Coast did, scrapped through the group but then improved as the tournament went on. I watched that final last night and Ivory Coast deserved the win tbf, they were the much better team.
