View Full Version : The BIG debate that nobody will talk about .. women commentators / pundits in men’s f

There’s an ongoing furore online ( X Twitter ) around this delicate topic yet the tv channels or radio stations are keeping silent .

Anyone prepared to air their views !?

My stance is that I hate listening to women commentating on men’s games and the same applies to the female pundits in the studio

There are hundreds of women’s games on telly now ( with no male commentators) so now there is plenty of work available in their game

The male commentators/pundits we are all used to seeing were all ex players who played their careers at the top level and we all grew up watching them .

Now whether you like them as people or not they all know what they are talking about - simply due to all the years of top level training / coaching and the experience that comes with that .

I used to positively detest Roy Keane and Gary Neville as players but they are my favourite pundits now simply because they are qualified to speak and criticise and more importantly .. because I just KNOW for sure that they are qualified to offer an opinion.

We don’t know anything about these women and as such they get about the same amount of respect that any person ( male or female ) dragged off the corridor and put in front of the cameras would get .”

I don’t know what person male or female who likes this bludgeoning phenomenon of women ‘experts’ smothering our beautiful game

I never listen to commentary at all in sport.
By Men or Women.
I use the mute button, usually put music I like on and sit and enjoy the matches.

Not having to listen to the tripe spoken a lot of time in the commentating.

If women have played football at the highest level I don't see the issue, it is the same game, it is not like there are different rules, and the women have won the Euros which is more than than the men have done? that said I didn't understand why there were no male pundits at the Womens world cup on UK TV at any rate, maybe it was different elsewhere

So I’m getting criticised for CARING about the health and safety of woman in boxing !?

I don’t think they SHOULD be boxing or participating in MMA because women are built differently than guys .

:::::-

Research into other sports has shown female participants are more prone to concussion than men, raising questions as to whether safety and equality are compatible in boxing, and splitting opinion among respected figures.

"What we do know, from other sports, is that women have a higher rate of concussion than men. And this is not really understood.
"The studies are uniform - if you look at women's soccer, the concussion rates are nearly 2:1, so women playing soccer against other women produce a higher rate of concussion, per hour of participation, than men playing against men.
"We did a study where we looked at jockeys - we have lots of female jockeys, particularly in point-to-point racing. The women actually fall off less often than the men but when they hit the ground, they have nearly four times the rate of concussion. It was about 3.6:1 compared to the men and that was very interesting for us but very, very difficult to explain. It's the same right the way around the world."

"It is disrespectful. Women are either boxers or they are not and therefore should be allowed to contest championship bouts over 12 three-minute rounds like the men. Anything less is sexist and fails to recognise the quality, commitment and hard work that women put into the sport."

See the idea of 3 minute rounds is horrendous.. the extra minute each round reduces their punch resistance and makes knockouts FAR more likely .. further adding to the risk .

Why More Women Should Take Up Boxing Classes

Boxing classes are great for women because it brings a strong feeling of empowerment and confidence. Even today, every woman has experienced a time when they were overlooked or dismissed as not good enough, simply because of their gender. Boxing is a unique sport that embodies power, strength, grace and mental tactics. Boxing teaches mental toughness and provides an emotional catharsis for all its participants. Boxing has proven to decrease stress hormones and increase endorphins, helping to relieve stress and boost your overall mood. Particularly for women, it’s important to discover your full strength, and with that, confidence in what you can accomplish in this world. There are no excuses and no limitations in a boxing ring. For women, it can be a powerful and life-changing way to discover their inner strength and apply it in every aspect of life.

Jose Mourinho never played football at a high level, he still knows his football, would agree with you if they dont know what they are talking about but do they, some male pundits dont know what they are talking about either even if they played at a high level, remember Alan Hansens 'you win nothing with kids comment'? No one and nothing is worse than Lee Dixon and/or Steve McManaman on commentary. Give me any woman in the world over those two!

However, there has been a massive influx of women doing commentary and punditry on men's football over the past 2 or 3 years and it's all because these companies want to show their political correctness. It's quantity, not quality and ticking all the right boxes for these major broadcasters. Most of the women shoehorned in really aren't that knowledgeable and saying some absolute ridiculous stuff. But the big "however" is that most of the men do too, and always have. Emma Hayes is someone who stands out for me, i like her a lot. And Kate Abdo as a presenter who i think is an excellent presenter. Not many blokes stand out for me really. I guess Carragher is alright, as much of a knob he's been in the past. Erm, yeah see i can't even think of male presenters and pundits who i care for tbh.

Women on men's football doesn't bother me. 95% of male and female pundits and commentators are meh.

i don't think anyone has explored the angle that having more women involved in sport in general, not just football, opens sport up to 50% of the population. It's a simple fact that having female involvement opens the sport up to being accessible and acceptable to women. 2 guys arguing about the size of their dicks as pundits, just doesn't cut it

It’s quantity rather than quality !!

Sue Smith for example on Soccer Saturday seems very knowledgeable and makes more sense than Gabbie Agbonlahor or Jamie O’Hara .

I have read your opening post and have had this debate with you before. Women who have played the game have as much understanding of the game as the men. I honestly don't understand why you feel it is ruining the game when as others have mentioned Sam Mattaface is employed to commentate. :laugh:There are loads of men I dislike who commentate but i wouldn't accuse them of ruining our beautiful game.

My Dad rarely listens to TV commentary - he mutes the TV and listens to the radio commentary as he finds it better. I am sure there is something you can do so you can still enjoy the games where there are female commentators.

With regards to the boxing - anyone who gets hit in the head over and over runs the risk of concussion. The women who compete train for years in order to compete and will be fully aware of the risks

I watched all the ex players on tv obviously ..

You simply can’t compare 10 years of watching them week after week on telly with a 5 minute clip on YouTube - playing at a far lower level !!

It doesn’t matter how much experience she’s had if I’ve never actually seen her play or know what the standard was ..

The ‘corridor’ comment was a throwaway remark that applies to males or females .

I think you are just being deliberately obtuse now ..tbh

No I'm not being deliberately obtuse at all. I have a different opinion to you and you seem to struggle with that. Anyone who has had a different opinion in this thread you have accused of not reading the OP correctly.

Just because you haven't seen someone play does not mean they are not qualified to do a job they have been hired to do.

If you want a debate, you have to be open to other opinions. Your throwaway comments are pretty off, yet you accuse me of being obtuse???

As a female lifelong football fan (I knew the offside rule before I could walk as my Dad and brother are football mad, my Dad played then took his coaching badges and then refereed when older and my brother was at Man U academy with the class of 92 but was dropped) my whole life revolved around football. The point is that many people feel the same a as I do .. the women pundits may well be qualified ( at a certain level) but I don’t know that for sure as I never saw them so I can’t take them seriously ..

If they wheeled in some ex male footballer that I didn’t know then I wouldn’t take him seriously either so It’s not gender thing .. if they had some bloke sat there who we’d never seen we wouldn’t take any notice of him either

He actually quite often watches one game on mute and listems to another game that isn't on TV too.

I actually like some of the women that have been drafted in as Pundits.

My main issue is why we're not seeing more men commentating on women's Football? Because it does stink of unfairness.

Maybe because none of the known faces know the first thing about the women players or the women’s game in general.

 why have you watched all the men in person? O4 have yiu watched them on Tv?

Karen Carney for example had a 18 year playing career.....including arsenal. Chelsea and England. I'd say she was pretty qualified and so your comment in the op where you said the women deserve the same respect as someone pulled off a corridor is pretty insulting to someone who dedicated 18 years of her life to the game.

Comments like that is why you feel you are getting attacked for sexism because that reeks of it I'm afraid

Karen Carney is one of the better female Pundits imo.

And she played for the Blues Women's team when it used to be one of the best in the country.

That's a fair point.

I still want to see Roy Keane do Punditry on a women's Football match though.

…I can understand that thought process of ‘familiarity’ of watching man admired player through their career and then feeling that they have that experience to commentate on the sport…but that won’t always be the case that a great player would be a great commentator as they’re two different skill requirements…but also, there are many levels because football has always been one of those more male dominated sports …so the players that are ‘more familiar’ are going to be males more than females and it’s about bringing that change as well and as Annie said previously…opening up the game including commentating aspects to it, also…if we stay with a mindset of ‘what we’re familiar with’ in so many things then how does change and equality in opportunities ever come about…

…football over the last few years…/…a decade or so…has been a real focus from primary school level to be more all inclusive to girls and it seems all kinds of wrong to me to then give a message to a female child of…oh, but commentary opportunities for male games aren’t so open to females…that’s still a struggling thing to get acceptance and equality in…that’s all kinds of wrong in 2024, surely….

So, if one is drinking in the pub with friends, both male and female and the topic turned to the days games. Does a mans opinion of the game have greater weight than a womans? Do you check the peoples credentials on football before they comment?

Football commentary and punditry is just an extension of normal everyday discussion and debate. We all have our own opinions and are free to say someone else is talking crap, as i do often  Why should women be excluded from contributing to that? Seriously, removing a womans right to comment or express an opinion is taking us back to the middle ages

surely pundits dont know every male player or watch every match? and they should be doing their research anyway and watching videos of past matches so that doesnt wash with me

I would imagine the reason we don't see a lot of male pundits on the women's game will come down to money. The disparity in pay for female players, prize money etc etc will extend into the money offered to pundits I would imagine.

This is another reason why more money needs to be invested into the women's game

Just wanna point out too, once great players often fail when they become coaches and managers. Lampard, Neville, Keane, Gerrard, Rooney have all failed as managers, just to name a few.

My only gripe (and it's not that deep for me, i can assure you) is that over the past 2 or 3 years women have been rushed into the men's game, commentary, punditry etc purely because they're "box tickers". It's nothing to do with their knowledge of the game, it's because broadcasters want to be seen as PC. Like i said in my previous post, it's quantity, not quality. But again, a lot of the men talk rubbish too so the problem with punditry (if you wanna call it that) is that both men, and women for the most part talk utter rubbish.

There was a bit of a thing in Germany for the CL final last season, a woman was on Commentary, Inter were losing 1-0, and the woman said (when the camera panned to the Inter manager) something like "oh im sure he just wants the match to end now". I mean, that was up there with the silliest things ever said by a commentator, male or female. Twitter pointed out that "why on earth would a manager, when only losing 1-0, with 10 mins to go, in a Champions League Final, would want the match to end?!". She was criticised for the comment and it was branded "sexist". It wasn't sexist to criticise that comment, had a guy said it he would have got the same treatment.

tl;dr - Nothing against women commentating and doing punditry on the men's game, but if they're crap, or say something stupid, they should be open to criticism just like the men are. And trust me, the men get lots of criticism, they always have.

If even 50% of people who watched men's football, watched women's football too, the money would roll in, trust me.

People all get behind the women's national team when they're in tournaments, but when it comes to the women's domestic game, it doesn't get a strong or big enough following.

People say "oh the pay is a joke between men and women", yet hardly any of the people complaining about it watch any of the women's domestic football. Never attend games. Never pump any money into any aspect of it.

As far as percentage goes too, for example FIFA prizes, the women actually get more prize money than the men. They're allocated a bigger percentage.

Swan

Sorry, the women obviously don't get more money than the men literally, but the percentage they receive is bigger than what the men get. So my point is, if more people got behind the women's game, more money would roll in.

…this is quite a nice article to read as well…

One thing that I just want to add to this thread.

What did everyone on here think when Sue Barker would talk about men's Tennis?

Because I don't remember that being anywhere near as controversial as women talking about Football.

Things like Wimbledon happen with men and women's tennis together in one tournament so it was less of a big deal. Sue was more of a presenter anyroad and not a pundit. Just like the excellent Kelly Dalglish.

Fair points.

Although someone like Martina Navratilova is in the role of a traditional Sports Pundit, would you say that it's wrong for her to comment on men's Tennis?

I'm asking this more out of pure curiosity tbh, as I always like to understand the logic that other people are going for.
