For the past decade, the oldest cultivated trees on Earth have been showing their vulnerability with many of the Mediterranean's olive groves drying up due to increasingly difficult weather conditions such as droughts and severe hailstorms leading to floods. And in 2023, the region – as well as the whole planet – experienced the hottest summer on record.

Italy, Greece and Spain, the largest olive-oil producing nations, have felt the greatest impact – as have chefs and consumers, who are baffled at what to cook with in lieu of their staple ingredient.

"I never saw in all my life a dryness like this one," said Rossella Boeri, olive oil producer and fifth-generation owner of Olio Roi in Badalucco, Italy, referring to the drought of this past summer. "Luckily the olive trees are strong, but we are facing a really big lack of production which is reflected in our olive oil prices, which coincidentally has led to a lower consumption and demand for our olive oil."

…I had a WhatsApp rant about Virgin Olive Oil prices one time in my girlie group…then on my next birthday they all came over with around 8 bottles of it for me…(…I think it had been on special offer price at the time…)…

…I have paid over £8 before and I think that’s when I had my WhatsApp rant…I try to buy it when there is an offer and £6ish is probably my hoped for amount …but yeah, I have paid more…

with the air fryer, we only use a tiny amount of olive oil and it lasts for ages, so even at £8 it would be like 1 bottle in 6 months

Morrisons are Great
selling 1 Litre at £7:15.

I just hope they keep it at that level.

Sod M&S wanting £7:50
same oil.

…sadly, it would cost quite a bit for me in petrol to get to a Morrisons so £7.15 will just have to stay a dream…

I buy from Lidl. Small bottle. Around 2 pounds. The spray one was only one pound.

It is ridiculously expensive

I go through it far too quickly as well as I cook everything with it, dip bread in it, and often have spaghetti aglio e olio which is basically just shitloads of oil, garlic and chilli
