FFS the original is (of course) a classic why have they remade it as incel porn.
…why do you say that it would be that when it’s a remake…?…

Just watched it, Conor McGreger was seriously cringey but it was enjoyable I thought. I must watch the original now too though to compare
…I’d forgotten that I’d made this thread so I’ll just copy and paste this from the what did you last watch thread…
…Road House 2024…..I didn’t hate it, I worried that I might but I didn’t…I started off really liking it, it felt like a very nostalgic movie and the setting location made me want to go to live in the Florida Keys…(…although I don’t think it was filmed there…)…and Jake Gyllenhaal gave the vibe that he was just having a great fun time…but it didn’t really quite gel with its storyline and characters, I didn’t feel…it was like bits all joined together but with, I don’t know…an awkward fit…it wasn’t smooth, it didn’t flow…it just lept and jumped from scene to scene and it felt as though it was missing any hmmmm….soul, I guess….anyways, though…I didn’t hate it and I did like some bits of it…the fight scenes were quite brutal but well co-ordinated and choreographed…I don’t know if Conor McGregor himself had any part in the fight choreography …the beginning was enjoyable, the ending was ok and the middle went off a bit…but I’d still say around 6/10 and not a bad way to spend a little while…

The realistic version of this film would feature him getting stabbed in the belly on his second night as a bouncer, and spending the rest of the movie in hospital with a life-altering serious abdominal wound. Or dead :joker:.

To be fair Ammi I'm usually happy to suspend disbelief but I just find droopy Jake Gyllenhaal beating up gang after gang of coked-up MMA thugs a stretch too far :joker:. It's fine when they have super-powers or something but when it's just some "really well trained" bloke? It's too much! :joker:
I feel the same about the John Wick movies. Keanu as Neo effortlessly kung-fu-ing wave after wave of villains? That's fine he is after all The One. But Keanu as just... some ex hitman... who is super skilled buy just some guy? I can't buy it! He would be dead in 10 minutes!

So i watched the original last night, it honestly felt like it was a completely different film to the remake. The plot was a little bit more believable for it's time and Dalton seemed more like a 3 dimensional character in the original I thought. The original seemed more like a character/plot driven story to the remake where it felt more like the characters and plot line was there to accommodate the fight and actions scenes. The one thing I didn't love about the original was the female characters and how women were portrayed in it, very background, decorative, boob shot people. It was of it's time I suppose though.
Anyway, i'm not really sure which I preferred, like I said they felt like completely different films rather than an original and a remake, I liked them both for different reasons

There's nothing wrong with that imo.

Yes but as long as that's not the only purpose of the female characters in a film, but it was the 80's, I think film has gotten a lot better in recent years for fleshing out it's female characters, thankfully

The new one is very different, you'd barely realise it was a remake if they said nothing and gave it a different name imo, you should give it a watch if you have prime and tell what you think
…I didn’t mind the remake, it was quite fun because it wasn’t a serious storyline …but I don’t recall lots of detail with the original…/…as in any differences …I do recall, though that the bar owner in the original was male…(…I think…)…and that changed to female for the remake…2024 has realised that WOMEN CAN BE BAR OWNERS TOO…not just be offered to have someone grope them in bars for $20….….

Pretty much all the actual characters in the original were male bar the Dr he had the relationship with and the bar maid played by a very young looking Patricia Arquette

I saw an interview with him and I think he did a lot of work for it, specific training and diet to get that shape to look like a Martial artist. He was in a film where he was a boxer, Southpaw a few years back and he was in great shape for that too but he looked like a boxer rather than an MMA fighter, so there's obviously differences for the type of physique he was going for

Being serious I agree with you really, characters shouldn't be there solely for their looks.
I do think modern Media might want to tap into that market a little bit more than they currently are though, and I think they won't do it because they seem to be scared that they'll be seen as misogynistic by some people, if they have attractive women in Films, TV, and especially Video Games made in the West.
Now that's not to say that there aren't attractive women in Entertainment, I mean straight away I can think of Rebecca Ferguson, Scarlett Johansson, Margot Robbie, and the Actress that plays Yennefer on The Witcher TV Series, but fiction that has those Actresses in them, aren't really playing on their attractiveness (which tbf is a good thing in some ways,) but it's the whole "averting the male gaze" arguments from Hollywood that I think pisses me off more than anything, because guys are still allowed to be sexualized, and according to Hollywood I would be seen as an "Incel" for pointing that particular hypocrisy out, which is absurd as I despise Incels, but I know that's the argument they'd make.
But I do think that market research shows that a bit of shallow casting does help make a product more commercially successful.
Like for example, not as many people would've watched Titanic if the two leads looked like Wayne Rooney & Susan Boyle (no offense intended for Susan Boyle, Rooney I'm still a little bitter at lol,) but that's my view on how that Film became a juggernaut success.
Apologies for the rant, I had to get that off my chest.

It's not necessarily hypocrisy because it's not like-for-like and there's no direct comparison - there's a risk of veering into being exploitative with sexualisation of women that doesn't exist with men. There's a different power dynamic and usually the sexualisation of male characters is intended to be subversive. I'd be wary of drawing the direct comparison. Sexualisation of men (USUALLY) doesn't carry the same inherent threat of control and violence. ANd of course, the historical context is entirely different.
That said there is and should be plenty of room for movies to "be sexy" without being exploitative. The issue there of course is that it's often going to come down to the skill level of the writers and director.
