Kate!

Are you voting? A straightforward yes no or undecided poll incoming.
We are not because...
We'd never vote Tory, and
We can't stand Keir Starmer, and
Nobody else stands a chance.

My local Green candidate is actually okay, might vote for her. More likely to just scribble all over my ballot though.

If you don't vote then you can't complain that is my view anyway, even if you are voting for someone who does not have a cat chance in hell in winning or if you spoil your vote in protest you should be voting...

Even if you write a horrific expletive all over the ballot or draw a hideous penis or tick all the boxes .... please vote.
Thought a snap general election had been called reading this
The only vote in my area is for the Police and Crime Commissioner :skull: and I think that's a waste of time but I will vote anyway probably

I cant see how anyone in England could vote for that waste of space Sunak or the simp Starmer?
joeysteele
04-04-2024, 09:00 PM
I'm not voting for Starmer, I can't, I'm NOT in his constituency.
Neither could I be voting for Sunak if I was ever to vote Conservative.
I'm not in his constituency either.
In the Council election I'll be voting for a candidate I believe will do their best for the local area.
In a general election Ill be voting for a Party in government.
Labour is the Party I want in government so despite Starmer my vote will go to Labour.
As we have Party government in the UK not a Presidency.
Just as many conservative voters who don't particularly like Sunak will also vote for THE Conservative Party.
However with Independents, Reform, Green, LibDems and other lesser Party candidates standing if I couldn't support one of the bigger 2 Parties, then I'd easily find another candidate from that list to vote for.
If you don't vote then you can't complain that is my view anyway, even if you are voting for someone who does not have a cat chance in hell in winning or if you spoil your vote in protest you should be voting...
by not voting, people are also exercising their democratic right .... people seem to forget that

Personally I disagree with that logic.
If you didn't vote in the mess that's the current Tory Government for example, then you have more of a right to complain about them, than someone that did vote for them and gets shocked when the party doesn't do what they wanted them to do, even though it was quite obvious that the party were just lying to get elected.
And I know that Labour lies as well (I'm not that naive or stupid.)

Personally I think that's the group that shouldn't complain, because those people ultimately were the ones that fell for the lies of the party in question, therefore are the reason why everyone else is suffering with bad leadership.

I’ve never voted
I’ve lived under a conservative government and a labour government with exactly the same outcome
Just because someone doesn’t vote doesn’t mean they lose their right to have an opinion
Stop worrying about what others are doing and worry about yourself
sure but then dont complain about the outcome....err Brexit
i voted in the brexit vote because my vote actually counted. Where i live, it is the 2nd most safe tory seat in the country, so there is literally no point in voting. If they lost, i would laugh my head off, but for that to realistically happen, the tories would need to be down to there last couple of seats, which would mean labour had wiped them out

In that case, maybe Tory voters will complacently think there's no point in voting. Maybe some disillusioned Tory voters will vote another way. Maybe enough people have since turned 18 who wouldn't vote Tory.

Yes but for the first time in a long time - I do not know who I'm going to vote for. I have some pretty major issues with various policies right across the current political landscape. I can no longer vote SNP. I will never vote Tory. I'm highly concerned about some of the policy decisions I think Labour might make. Lib Dems are obviously a joke. I'm not an environmentalist (too much nihilism for it I'm afraid). I'm not an old hamskin boot so I can't vote for any of the new right wing racist gammon parties.
The perils of the sensible centre I guess ... it may end up being a tactical vote.

This is half the reason Brexit happened in the first place. People didn't realise the implications, didn't even bother to look into it, let alone vote... 'cos the "Remain" team at the time were highly complacent and passed on that complacency to the public. People thought "leave" simply wasn't going to happen, so didn't get out of bed to vote.

i just can't bring myself to vote for any of the main party's, it was the same at the last GE. If there was a good independent, i would be first in the queue, but there isn't

Quite.
I daresay that people who "want change" are more inclined than those who don't - those who voted for Brexit would have wanted the UK to leave the EU, and these people outnumbered those who either didn't care(/vote), and those who wanted to Remain; and those who, as you say, didn't bother because they complacently believed the voted would be for Remain.
So I'd say it's within the realms of possibility that similarly, Labour could just squeak through due to complacency and enough people wanting A Change(tm).

Then have your say with a spoiled ballot. They get counted too, and the more "None, Thanks" that get counted, the more it can at least create a discussion as to why people can't even hold their nose to vote for anyone.

I agree it's a better option than not voting at all as it removes and assumptions about the reason for the lack-of-vote... I think really the issue is that there's no such thing as opting out. Not voting is effectively a half-vote for the "bookie's favourite" -- it's saying "Meh I'll largely accept the expected outcome".

Yeah, I always vote. I like voting.
Although there was a community council election here recently where I didn't vote, because all the candidates were individuals, not associated with any political party. I didn't know anything about any of them so I didn't know who to vote for.

In this election they were all independents. I think you might have had to choose 4 out of 5 candidates. or something like that.
I would have been making a random selection.

If you don't vote you still have the right to complain about things. Ultimately though, voting is how politicians get held to account, so if they knew you weren't voting, they are less likely to listen to you.

Although... I was at a count where someone had drawn a cock and balls next to the Tory's name and as there was no other mark on the paper we claimed it as a vote...and the returning officer accepted it. So if you're going to spoil your ballot, make sure you make a thorough job of it.
I think everyone should have to vote even if you do spoil your ballot. It's a civic duty like jury service.

I always vote. I am in the US and there's little difference in the grand scheme who we vote nationally as the parties always stick up for themselves, so our destiny feels prewritten in favor of one direction mindless partisanship. Locally is where it actually matters.
