Ireland very strong chances for a semi top 3 result i think

such a supersolid staging too, excuse my german but Grosses Kino :clap1: :clap1:

same goes for Ukraine, also a superstrong powerful staging

Portugal also one of the strongest entries here

Croatia a frontrunner yes, the lasagna is like a diesel, takes a while to get going but once he's cruising, he is in superb form

apart from that, very open semi, i guess only Moldova is a certain NQ

also a interval in this first semi

In the First Semi-Final, Benjamin Ingrosso will give us a show-stopping medley featuring just some of the songs he's recently performed across Europe as part of his Better Days Tour.

looking forward to the first show tomorrow, nice to start off relaxed that i don't have to vote here

i will however give my scores from 1.0 to 10.0 as usual, my little tradition every year, playing the role of a judge (either the nice judge or the harsh judge depends)

No, the UK is one of the Countries automatically in the contest every year.

No need for a separate thread, especially how you treated the one you had control of last year, editing the title and such when you were upset by the results

Nicky91

No, the UK is one of the Countries automatically in the contest every year.

yes this is new this year, to make up the numbers slightly for the countries we've lost recently (although i can see Romania, North Macedonia, Monaco and maybe even Montenegro return next year, could see Turkiye make their return somewhere soon depends on Erdogan's mood, if he can change his mind on seeing this contest as good propaganda and given 100% televote semi's, turkish hated the juries in semi's tbh, Bulgaria is a unknown, could stay away for long term or could also return somewhere unexpectedly)

No need for a separate thread, especially how you treated the one you had control of last year, editing the title and such when you were upset by the results

i include BBC1 Live 8PM in these threads, the final can be discussed in your general discussion thread though

i won't edit the title anymore though and i'm not gonna let results upset me, i trust the general public and the professional juries to make the best entry win and i think i'm 90% confident on who i think stands a good chance to win (Croatia, Norway, Ukraine, Israel, Italy and maybe France as a strong jury winner outsider? i think Germany can avoid bottom 3 zone with a decent jury result, it has good jury radio friendlyness potential, the same sound as rag'n'bone man, teddy swims)

Nicky91
06-05-2024, 01:37 PM
no need to discuss Russia, Belarus, because they no longer are EBU members

as for possible debuting countries: Kazakhstan is one who i think could join the adult contest too on a invite soon? Kosovo will likely join whenever they stabilized/normalized relations with Serbia enough and if Albania aren't annoyed them stealing their festival i kenges format, Faroe Islands well is more difficult for them to join since they belong to Denmark although they found a loophole at the UEFA for membership, so they might look for similar loopholes regarding EBU membership too?

New Zealand on a invite to bring australia's neighbour over would be nice, they also follow the contest now similar to australia, and they would add much of diversity with their maori culture

Welcome back to Eurovision Luxembourg, not seen since 1993

they had preferred the news broadcasts to entertainment shows for many years

but more recently one of their winners Anne-Marie David had been pushing for their return quite actively

also among their delegation is Andorra 2009 artist Susanna Georgi apparently (whom is still trying to make a Andorra comeback happen, with a Catalan partnership deal for some other year)

such a iconic slayage

also happy Serbia, Portugal, Slovenia qualified, and they are gonna do better in the final, with the juries especially

happy they survived the 100% televote semi

would've swapped Cyprus for Australia but ok, australia the english parts were too dated i guess

my fave performances were Ireland, Croatia, Ukraine scored them a 10/10 only ones, but i also loved Luxembourg  happy they also got through

Eurovision Song Contest 2024, first semi-final, review: Croatia steals show
while the UK already looks doomed

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/content/dam/tv/2024/05/07/TELEMMGLPICT000376744263_17151192766700_trans_NvBQ zQNjv4BqpVlberWd9EgFPZtcLiMQf_4Xpit_DMGvdp2n7FDd82 k.jpeg?imwidth=600

Milking cows, exploding trousers, screeching witches, a rap about Mother Teresa
and a half-naked man with a mullet hatching out of a giant denim egg. It could
only be the annual audio-visual fever dream that is Eurovision. The 68th
edition of the world’s biggest and most bonkers music competition got under
way with Eurovision Song Contest Semi-Final 1 (BBC One).

We were frequently warned about flashing images and strobe effects. We
weren’t warned about the show being stolen by something called Baby
Lasagna.

Croatia’s memorably named entrant delivered a rock-techno racket about
economic migration - that well-known topic for pop lyrics. It was endearingly
eccentric, infernally catchy and will take some beating on Saturday.

The British contingent might as well pack up and head home early. UK
entrant Olly Alexander has been branded “complicit in genocide” for his
participation, which seems extreme. The Years & Years frontman and It’s A
Sin star promised to tackle Eurovision in “the gayest way possible” but
despite crooning from inside a sort of zero-gravity space toilet, he failed to
stand out.

Formulaic synth-pop affair “Dizzy” feels like a Pet Shop Boys B-side.
Alexander is unlikely to make up for Mae Muller’s chastening flop last year.
He’d concentrated on gimmicky staging and forgotten to write an actual tune.

Bambie Thug rightly broke the Irish curse to become its first qualifier for six
years with a theatrically demonic slice of “ouija-pop”. Johnny Logan would be
turning in his grave if he was actually dead. Indeed, the two-time winner
proved he was alive and well by popping up to perform a heartfelt Loreen
tribute.

Keeping Graham Norton’s seat warm for Saturday, Scott Mills and Rylan
added arch commentary for UK viewers. Rylan was more amusing but both
were so keen to keep talking, it often felt like being harangued in stereo.
Nice-but-bland Mills should be jettisoned next year.

Of the 15 semi-finalists competing, the top 10 went forward to this weekend’s
showpiece grand final. Luxembourg returned after a 30-year absence and
narrowly snuck through. We waved a relieved farewell to Poland’s Lady Gaga-
lite, Moldova’s yodel-fest, the Icelandic Jane McDonald, Azerbaijan’s howl-
athon and, in the biggest shock result, Australia’s feeble Grace Jones
facsimile. It was difficult to make a case for any of them deserving to stay
but it all seemed like a lot of trouble just to eliminate five songs.

Oh god no. Ireland was awful.

Croatia was absolutely brilliant! It was like being at a rock concert. Reminded me of Maneskin and how much they owned that stage. She was great, clearly others agree, as we actually qualified for the final this year

Not my thing, but good luck to her.

Yes, it's absolutely terrible. I'd be horrified if it somehow won.

Fair enough, I personally think that the performance had a striking tone to it.

It was different and stood out for that
It has something and it's staging is the biggest selling point of it.

I'm pleased to see Ireland back in the contest and I can see how people voted for it to get there too.

Were you watching an old episode of Emerdale Farm ?

Of the ones who did go through I was stunned Portugal did.
There was just nothing really about it.
Sang well but that was that.

Ukraine is one that will grow on me and Croatia really good
I wasn't surprised Ireland got through too, it was so different that I can see how votes were enough to get them through.

Portugal imo were the dullest entry on the night, so I can understand why you didn't connect with it, and tbh I'm amazed that enough people did connect with the song as well.

And tbf Ireland's entry will be marmite (especially with the singer airing their political views on top,) but I personally just think that they stoodout more than Portugal and Sweden on the night.

Bambie’s song isn’t something I’d want to listen to outside of the contest but that was an incredible performance and warranted the final.

…From what I recall, I quite liked Bambi Thug’s song when I first heard it…but I can’t specifically recall it atm and I haven’t seen it staged yet …so that’ll be an entry to look forward to as well…good luck to the Republic of Cork also……

What a great show it was. Let's hope tonight is just as good.

It's just too much for me and I love something different.
It does stand out, so it could do well?

I voted Ireland and I loved it, so different but very Eurovision like. I hope they get in the top ten

I agree, especially about the staging.

The only thing that I'm still wondering, is how do I talk about Bambie Thug? Like are they a man? Woman? Non-Binary? I don't mean it to be rude, I genuinely can't tell what they are, so I was wondering how I'm meant to address the individual when talking about them.

I'm happy to see Ireland back in the final round too Joey.

And they'll finish above the UK and Germany at the very least.

I'm saying that because Europe obviously hates UK and Germany.

Tbf he has a good voice, so I wouldn't personally begrudge him getting points.
