I have never voted and never EVER will. ..

Politics is full of completely corrupt and totally inept individuals - in the uk and everywhere else in the world

I can remember back to the days of Harold Wilson so we have had countless changes in government / parties … guess what … for the vast majority ( everyone in here for example) it doesn’t make a jot of difference to us who is in charge ..

There's other areas too like Burnley where Labour will be hit by the fury from former Councillors livid at the Party's failure to address the Israel/Palestine issue to their satisfaction.

That issue if Starmer doesn't get things smoothed over will remain a problem for him.
Even in a few seats in the general election.

Former Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson was turned away from his local polling station after forgetting to bring acceptable photo ID.

As first reported by Sky News, he returned later with the necessary ID and was able to vote.

He cast his ballot in South Oxfordshire, where voters are choosing a police and crime commissioner.

New rules requiring photo ID to vote were introduced by Mr Johnson's government in the Elections Act 2022.

The change was rolled out last year, with local elections in May 2023 the first time voters needed to show ID.

According to the Electoral Commission, about 14,000 people were unable to vote in last year's local elections in England as a result of the new rules.

Reform might be about to wipe out the Tories

The Conservative party would have been lucky to have had a 1997-style wipeout. This result may prove terminal

Prof Sir John Curtice writes:

The overnight election results have been every bit as disappointing for the Conservatives as they might have feared.

The party is so far losing one in two of the seats they have been trying to defend. When all the results are in, it is at risk of suffering the catastrophic 500 losses of council seats that some analysts had predicted.

The party’s vote fell by 32.1 points in Blackpool South, making it the party’s third worst ever performance in a parliamentary by-election. With 16.9 per cent of the vote, its best performance yet, Reform appears to have done much of the damage.

Moreover, in the local elections the Conservative vote fell most heavily in those wards where Reform fielded a candidate. The only silver lining for Tory HQ was that Reform only contested one in six of the wards where there was an election on Thursday. A full slate would have been even more devastating.

Meanwhile, some of the evidence underneath the bonnet of the headlines will particularly worry the party.

First, detailed ward by ward results collected by the BBC suggest that on average support for the party is down on last year’s local elections. That slippage is consistent with the message of the opinion polls that, rather than closing the gap on Labour, the party has actually lost ground over the last twelve months.

Second, the fall in Conservative support is proving to be highest in the party’s heartlands. The better the Conservatives did locally in 2021, that is, when most of the seats being contested on Thursday were last fought, the greater the fall in their support now.

This pattern fits with the evidence of recent MRP polling, which suggested the Conservatives could win even fewer seats in the general election than the 165 to which they fell in 1997.

Third, Labour advanced most strongly by squeezing the Liberal Democrat vote in wards where the Tories were trying to fend off a Labour challenge.

If these patterns persist, it could cost the party dearly in the general election.

Downing St will be hoping for better news today, not least in Tees Valley where polls have suggested Ben Houchen could hang on to the post of Mayor. But on the evidence so far, possible isolated successes should not distract from the broader message of the local ballot boxes – the Conservative party is still in a very deep electoral hole.

arista what on earth are you on about.

It is a NOC control now.
Which means it needs 2 parties in coalition or the major one with support to run it.

It doesn't mean Labour will have to bow down and do all what others say.
They'll need to make concessions but it will still be Labour dominated.

Just as the councils where the Cons have lost their majority in.

He has been a really good Mayor for Teesside I agree.

There'll be a big swing to Labour but I'm glad he is near certain to hold it.

Keir Starmer has declared he is confident Sadiq Khan will achieve a historic third term as Mayor of London as his Tory challenger Susan Hall aims to secure an upset.

Speaking on a visit to the East Midlands, where Labour triumphed in the first ever metro mayor contest, Sir Keir told reporters Mr Khan was “absolutely the right candidate” amid speculation the result could be tighter than many predicted.

“He has got two terms of delivery behind him and I am confident that he has got another term of delivery in front of him,” Sir Keir said.

SIR – Following the Blackpool South by-election result, the usual
Conservative suspects came on air to warn us that voting for Reform UK may
let in Labour, and that its voters should hence continue to support the
Government, despite its track record.

I always want to ask these people if they would run a business this way. If
they had hired someone who presented well at interview, but who, once
installed, proved dishonest, incompetent, lazy, spendthrift and unwilling to
carry out any of the agreed work, would they keep on paying that person for
fear of hiring someone even worse?

The Conservative Party needs to be ejected from office as a goal in itself,
because if it is not, it will not change. This is entirely separate from the
question of who replaces it. It will then be up to the party to reflect in
opposition on where it went wrong, and return to the electorate in due course
with a Conservative offering.

The terrible judgement in choosing her from the Cons only highlights their incompetence.

As for former Con voters voting for Reform party.
This arrogant PM and his backside crawling Ministers, just don't get those voters don't much care whether Labour now wins.
They just have decided this government has to be gone.

Their arrogance to think just saying vote Reform get Labour matters shows how detached from reality this PM is

"Possible" Hung Parliament.
Due to The smaller Parties and Gaza Vote blockages

It is a 9% lead
34% over 25% is a 9 difference.
Not 7.
So he's wrong on that .
There were NO elections in Scotland and only Police crime commissioner ones in Wales..
So no hard data from there .

Plus in local elections, the Independent candidates take a higher share of votes than they ever do in general elections

Selective analysis of results is fine for fun.
However not always the best guide..

However hey, a hung parliament is fine by me in fact my wish for PR would only give hung parliaments.
A hung parliament would be the end of this shambolic government because there's no other party in parliament ( maybe the DUP possibly might),which would support this present Con party as a governing force.

So fine by me.

I doubt any other could be, even just as bad never mind worse, except perhaps the DUP and Reform.

However under this outdated and unrepresentative election system we have, realistically there can only be either a Con led government or Labour led government.
So the surest way to get this shower of a disaster hard-line heartless CON government out, is to vote Labour.

Where Lib Dems are the only alternative however in some seats too, it would be better voting Lib Den there to help get the Cons out too.

Sure but

LABOUR have had to operate in almost hung parliament or tiny majority territory many times and did.
1950 to 1951.
1964 to 1966.
1974 then right through to 1979.

They'd manage because they can compromise which is something the Cons don't.

A Labour minority supported by the Lib Dems, or even Greens if they had a few more seats.
Or even the SNP.
All that could work pretty well in my view..
A Labour/ Lib Dem coalition or pact could work too.
It did in the late 70s for a fair period of time.
