Going to miss Iain, he has always been so measured and his presenting style was great, think he will be a brilliant MP hope he makes it

Broadcaster Iain Dale has said farewell to LBC radio station after 14 years as he announced plans to run in the General Election.

Dale joined LBC in 2010, but broadcast rules mean candidates in the General Election are not allowed to present radio shows.

“You know how much politics means to me,” the 61-year-old said on air.

“If you’ve listened for any length of time, you know I’ve always had two ambitions in life. One was to be a radio presenter and the other was to be an MP.

“Last time I tried, the electorate fought back. But now I am putting my hat in the ring again to be a candidate at the General Election.

Actually I like Ian.
Good luck to him and he would be the kind of candidate as an MP who could maybe help bring some sanity and integrity back to the Con Party.

Broadcaster Iain Dale has quit the race to become the Conservative candidate for Tunbridge Wells just days after announcing his bid to stand in the General Election.

The radio presenter said farewell to LBC after 14 years as he announced his plan on Tuesday evening.

But he has since withdrawn from the candidate selection process after the Liberal Democrats discovered comments he made two years ago on a podcast, when he said he “never liked” the Kent town and “I’d quite happily live somewhere else”.

Announcing his decision to Nick Ferrari on LBC on Friday, Mr Dale said: “I instantly recognised the problems with that.

“There is a context to it but nobody’s interested in context or nuance in these situations, you just have that little clip and that would be on every single Lib Dem leaflet that was put out in the election campaign.

He added that he “wasn’t willing to suffer death by a thousand cuts” and risk further comments arising before nominations close next week.

“I think I’ve recognised the political reality and I don’t want to do anything that would damage whoever is chosen,” he said.

On his comments about Tunbridge Wells, the broadcaster and author said part of the reason he got angry on the podcast was because of road works that had been ongoing for three months.

“If I hated it that much, would I have stayed living there for 27 years? I don’t think I would,” he said.

“Everybody listening to this now will have some complaint about where they live. I just put it in far too graphic terms.”

On Tuesday, Mr Dale told LBC listeners there was “no guarantees” he will be selected as a candidate “let alone elected”, but “I know that I would forever kick myself if I didn’t at least have a go” ahead of the July 4 election.

On what the future holds as he stood down on Friday, Mr Dale told Ferrari he would reflect on taking time to make important decisions.

He added: “I’ve made the mistake of making a decision without probably thinking of every possible consequence, so it would be a bit silly to do the same again.”

At tunbridge wells?

If that happens, i will eat my hat

The Lib Dems were only 1% behind the Tories gen election before last. It's kind of a myth nowadays that T-Wells is just full of rich people. Don't get me wrong, there is massive wealth in the town, and it's a middle class hub for sure. But it's rapidly becoming very diverse, and i can assure you there are big pockets of rougher/blue collar areas in the town. The working class has a strong hold in T-Wells now, and you know that was key in the Lib Dem victory imo, they went after the working class. Labour put no effort whatsoever into the vote here, the Cons are too lazy assuming an easy win, yet the Lib Dems have really put the work in over the past few years. I live in T-Wells (if you haven't already gathered ) and i live in a very working class part of the town, and i was visited twice by the Lib Dem candidate, hell i was seriously tempted to vote for the first time ever this time round too, the only choice would have been the Lib Dems for me had i voted (their candidate commented on how beautiful my pure white, deaf cats one green eye and one blue eye were, he didn't have me at hello, but he had me after that :joker: ). Labour are a pathetic joke of a party, and the Tories are just incredibly arrogant down here. The Lib Dems seem to care a lot more.

In saying that, real estate is on the rise here in general, very average 3 bed houses in very average areas are going for £400/500k atm. A friend of mine who's mum passed a year and half ago sold her 3 bed house, next to the "Jeremy Kyle council estate" (it really is full of just knobs, i know it well, naturally :smug:) sold for £425k, insanity. Wouldn't like to think what the firm middle class area properties got for now, not much change from £1m for the 4 bed homes in a few areas of the town. And into the millions in the posher areas.

T-Wells is a strange town, lots of rich and snobby middle class, but trust me the working class are what makes this town tick nowadays.
