Brave men and women. Not many left now, but still they go. Makes you embarrassed over the things we fight for these days

The D-Day operation of June 6, 1944, brought together the land, air, and sea
forces of the allied armies in what became known as the largest amphibious
invasion in military history. The operation, given the codename OVERLORD,
delivered five naval assault divisions to the beaches of Normandy, France. The
beaches were given the code names UTAH, OMAHA, GOLD, JUNO, and SWORD.
The invasion force included 7,000 ships and landing craft manned by over
195,000 naval personnel from eight allied countries. Almost 133,000 troops
from the United States, the British Commonwealth, and their allies, landed on
D-Day. Casualties from these countries during the landing numbered 10,300.
By June 30, over 850,000 men, 148,000 vehicles, and 570,000 tons of supplies
had landed on the Normandy shores. Fighting by the brave soldiers, sailors,
and airmen of the allied forces western front, and Russian forces on the eastern
front, led to the defeat of German Nazi forces. On May 7, 1945, German
General Alfred Jodl signed an unconditional surrender at Reims, France.

Yes,
The World Armies beat the Nazi Germany's Power
after they killed many of us.
But nowadays some folks will not even Vote
in a General Election
even though they died for our freedom,

A beautiful and moving ceremony this morning and a wonderful tribute last night. No less than the veterans and the fallen deserve.

They fought so that people had freedom to choose what they personally wanted to do.
Which if some people don't want to vote in an Election, that is their freedom and choice to do that.

Better in Australia
You must Vote By Law

I guess if you want to use the freedoms people died for to fuel your apathy, that's between you and your conscience.

That's worse.
Forcing people to vote when they don't want to is not a democracy.

I personally don't see what I'm saying as morally wrong, imo forcing people into doing something that isn't about basic moral code, is wrong, it just is.
Forcing people to vote in Elections is wrong, as not voting doesn't physically harm anyone.

I'm not forcing people, I'm reminding you that people have a civic duty, even if they spoil their ballot paper.

Not attending is already kind of choosing to spoil their ballot paper though imo, if anything them attending is just a pointless exercise if they're not going to vote for anybody.
I suppose that we'll have to agree to disagree.

I do agree, looking back on it, I feel like half of us on TIBB wouldn't even know most of these stories if it weren't for Arista opening up threads about the topic.

British paras jumping into Normandy to commemorate D Day were immediately met by French officials demanding to see their passports. At the same time 316 illegal migrants crossed the channel from France. Seems their border control sometimes works.

i wish we didn't have Maxima attending this tbh (since she is the daughter of a war criminal, Jorge Zorreguieta whom caused much genocide in argentina with those so called death flights)
if it were up to me, i had King Willem-Alexander and Crown Princess Amalia attending
but that is my personal opinion of political correctness on a 80th anniversary remembrance of D-Day event
i'm same about our 4th May war remembrance day though
