But also, shame to see my country, "driving" EU on this dark lane ...

I know little of French politics.

However it could be he's looking forward to the 2027 Presidential elections possibly.

Macron is in his last years as President now, these are parliamentary elections.
It may well be opposition to him, gets strengthened in these elections.
However possibly making the parliament less popular in a few years time

He recently appointed Gabriel Attal as Prime Minister.
He is I understand quite popular.
Also is seen as a successor to Macron as President.

So calling this election may be a means to an easier door opened for Attal in 2027.
If the parliament becomes more unpopular.

If I was French and lived in France I'd have voted for Macron, his Party and Attal in 2027 if he runs then.

Hi joeysteele,

Macron cannot be President in 2027, as he allready made 2 "mandas" (we call it), let's say "contracts".
He's not allowed to do a third one in a row.

i think macron is calling the election now, before the right get even more popular and take power. He is gambling that the left/middle can still win at this point in time

Yes, I knew that thank.you.:wavey:

Is it right that there is a view the new PM Gabriel Attal as I mentioned would likely run for President in 2027 however.

Map 1 - considering "left wing" splited in 4 :

They all lost in many cases.
We also see that Paris didn't felt in "what i think a trap".

https://i.ibb.co/WPDS8Nr/01.png

Map 2 - Then if you consider same votes and you group the 4 "left wing" to build "Front populaire group" :

https://i.ibb.co/YLCZ5RX/02.png

They manage to get more power... but not enough (i mean at first vote). It shows the irritation of major french people. I believe (or hope) it's more arround "purchasing power" rather than immigration.

The other "small story" that might didn't pop outside France is Eric Ciotti, head of former let's say "Standard right" (the right from sarkozy, a bit Chirac, pretending a bit of De Gaules too, etc), Stuck and reducing between Macron and Far right. 48H hours after vote he said that his party joins "Far right". He took this decision alone. All his team, members, are disavowing him. It's now at the court. As members try to push him out of party, so this partnership decision becomes not official.

They try to make 3 Big Blocks :
- Left with extreme left
- Macron
- Right with extreme right

A young today who is bored of Macron has to join a group that has some extreme ideas. Mad! In my opinion. But Macron is so hated that this could happen... Sad!

it looks like Macron has hugely misjudged how people would vote in a snap election. The far right and far left are set to battle it out for power, while his party shrinks to nothing.

If we thought politics was bad here, well, all i can say is watch out for hoards of migrants heading in this direction, because they won't be safe in france. We all know how the french are with protests, the whole thing could get very ugly, very quickly

The British commentariat, which doesn’t know much about French politics, is
mesmerised and delighted by the fact the Left came first. It was quite a
surprise.

But the bigger political picture is that France how has a hopelessly hung
parliament from which it will be very difficult to create a stable government
that will last. In that respect we’re back to the Fourth Republic (look it up). It
managed 21 governments in 12 years!!

The bond markets will be over the moon at the prospect. Not. Let’s see what
happens to OATS (French gilts) tomorrow.

Some pertinent facts:

1. A huge chunk of the Left New Popular Front is just as objectionable as the
National Rally.
2. The NPF was cobble together at the last minute and might not last a month never mind create a coalition.
3. Hard to see how the Macron centrists could come to a sensible
arrangement with the NPF. But to split it might leave any coalition short of a majority.
4. France’s ability to form a government now suspect.
5. The National Rally is the big loser of the night but even that doesn’t change the fact that
6. Macron is a busted flush.

Just watch this space.

Prominent French Jews issue alarm bells over the antisemitic far-left
achieving victory in the parliamentary elections.

Paris Chief Rabbi Moshe Sebbag:

“It is clear today that there is no future for Jews in France. I tell everyone
who is young to go to Israel or a more secure country.”

French Jewish Philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy:

“The left is once again kidnapped by the infamous Melenchon. Divisive
language. Hate of the republic on the lips. Around him right now are some
incarnations of the new antisemitism. A chilling moment. A stain: Continue to
fight against these people.”

Journalist Yohann Taieb:

“Melenchon’s victory is a terrible signal of impunity sent to the anti-Jewish
Islamo-Faschists.”

Didn't she just win the popular vote?

If you're gonna start accusing people of being unpopular, then at least start with the unpopular people rather than the popular ones.

Right wing neoliberalism and uber capitalism has destroyed living standards over the last 50 years, one left wing guy gets remotely near high officce and everyone loses their sh1t.

Maybe a fresh approach might help. The fear isn't that the left wing guy fails, it's that he succeeds.

Macron is the peak of centrism doing nothing, but laying the fertile ground for far right politics.

i think we've done better with our majority of right wing government with a few centre left members, and a prime minister with experience from counterintelligence, antiterrorism taskforce rather than politics
