[A senior Conservative candidate reportedly
placed an £8,000 bet on losing his seat
at the general election.

Sir Philip Davies neither confirmed nor
denied the wager,
first reported by the Sun,
external but rejected suggestions
he had done "anything illegal".

Sir Philip, who has been the
Tory MP for Shipley since 2005,
told the newspaper he expected
to lose the seat on 4 July.

He is defending a 6,242 majority
in the West Yorkshire seat.

Sir Philip said it was "nobody's business"
whether he placed the bet or not.

He said: "What's it got to do with
you whether I did or didn't.
I hope to win.
I'm busting a gut to win.
I expect to lose.]

Sure may be legal
But I would cancel the bet
as he knows
he will be kicked out

nah, that isn't legal, and it is far worse than betting on the date of the election. At a minimum it is fraud against the betting company

He bet on losing his own seat? Essentially no different to a boxer taking a dive. Not only would no bookmaker in their right mind take that bet, it'd probably class as fraud.

That aside allowing an £8k bet on that at all is crazy, I can't see more than about £1000 being authorised.

Of course ultimately it's the actual bookmakers decision - the folks you see in shops are not actually bookmakers, the decisions on big bets like that (for the big bookmakers) are made by a handful of blokes in a few offices in London. Literally a small number of people covering the whole UK. Sometimes you'd get to talk to them on the phone if it was an unusual bet request. It was like getting a call from a celebrity :flutter:.

Well he gambled and it didn't pay off.

Or pay out.
