…I couldn’t see a thread but apologies Arista if there is one…

A British soldier has suffered serious injuries following a stabbing near an Army barracks in Kent.

Police responded to reports of an assault on Tuesday afternoon and rushed the victim to hospital.

Witnesses described hearing screaming, while there were reports of the suspect launching more than one attack on the victim.

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder.

Here’s what we know so far about the stabbing…

What we know

Kent Police said they were called to a report of a serious assault in Sally Port Gardens in Gillingham, Kent, at around 5.55pm on Tuesday, 23 July.

The road is near Brompton Barracks, the headquarters of the British Army’s 1 Royal School of Military Engineering Regiment.

The victim was discovered with “serious injuries” and was airlifted to hospital for treatment. Kent Police said his injuries were “consistent with stab wounds” and they described his condition as “serious”.

An Army spokesman confirmed that the victim is a soldier. They are working with Kent Police to help with the investigation.

A 24-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, the force said. A cordon is currently in place around the scene, while there is an ongoing police presence in the area.

Defence secretary John Healey described the attack as “shocking”.

What we don't know

Police have not released the identity of the victim. We also do not know his exact age, other than being in his 40s.

While it has been confirmed that the victim is a soldier, the Army declined to comment on reports in the media that he was in uniform at the time of the attack.

We do not know any details about the arrested man, other than his age. Police have not given any other information as to his identity.

There are no details on the motive behind the attack and we do not know if the suspect knew the victim.

Eyewitnesses to the attack told The Sun that they saw the suspect wearing a ski mask and a NASA bomber jacket riding a moped before the incident. However these details have so far not been confirmed by police.

It was also reported by the eyewitness that the victim’s wife tried to fight off the attacker, but these details have also yet to be confirmed.

According to Metro, the victim staggered towards his house but was chased down and attacked for a second time.

Yahoo News UK has contacted Kent Police for an update.

Eyewitness accounts

One eyewitness told The Sun that the soldier received injuries to his face and the rest of his body.

They told the publication: “Blood was everywhere as I tried to apply pressure to his wounds until the police arrived…

“When the guy’s wife came out and started trying to pull the guy off he didn’t even try to hurt her.“

Another witness described what they say were the weapons used in the attack. They said: “This was with two kitchen knives, about nine to 10 inches long, and there were about seven of us there who witnessed it.

“The soldier was in uniform. He works at the barracks, lives in Sally Port Gardens and was walking home.“

The witness said the attacker rode off on the moped before he was arrested.

From the bbc website...

The soldier was in uniform when he was attacked near his home on Tuesday.

The Home Office said the stabbing is not being treated as terror-related, and is believed to be the result of a mental health episode.

“The soldier was in uniform. He works at the barracks, lives in Sally Port Gardens and was walking home.“

The witness said the attacker rode off on the moped before he was arrested.

His colour is irrelevant unless it was somehow some type of motivation to the attack.... question is would he have gone for any soldier or is there particular soldiers who he wanted to attack ,it seems he has a dangerous unhealthy hatred for soldiers and probably uniform in general, it's targeted . So it will be some terrorist related reason. So likely this has more to do with culture and politics, plus the fact he's a twisted lunatic and should be locked up for good.

I only mentioned his skin colour because I have noticed for awhile now that as a Forum we don't really report many positive news stories to do with black people.

Although I tried to Google information on "black people doing good deeds" but I think that Google/Bing are both against using skin colour in their search engines, because good deeds in general were popping up.

I suppose a good deeds thread might not be a bad idea.
