Chilly.

But for the Seine, I'm gonna go with a maverick approach and pronounce it the Seine as in Seinfeld. :smug:

Chillay is more of an American pronunciation?

But it reminds of the piss take video of someone on their gap year and how they would say it.

The commentator was British though, he sounded quiet young, not sure who he was, he started off saying Chilly then changed to Chillay maybe he heard someone else refer to it as that and thought he might be cancelled, I was still reeling from Claire Balding and 'the Sen'

It wouldn't be the first time a young Brit's pronunciation of certain words was subconsciously influenced by an overdose of American media throughout their youth, in fairness.

I remember I pronounced the word 'girl' with a hard 'r' til I was around 11.

When people pronounce foreign words the way foreigners do it sounds pretentious to me. Like when BBC news readers pronounce an African leader's name.

When you look at the 5 of us who pronounce it that way 2 of us are Irish and 2 are Northern English (not sure what kind of accent Livia has, London maybe?) don't reckon us first 4 at least would sound posh or la de da

We need to do another of those threads where we record ourselves saying a list of words and include these ones

Having been to Chile twice. And travel the full length and breadth of the country, from
Punta Arenas to Arica, I can confirm the correct way to pronounce it is Che-le
As for the Saine, I know it Sen but I still say Sane.

When people pronounce foreign words the way foreigners do it sounds pretentious to me. Like when BBC news readers pronounce an African leader's name.

It's because the Presenters on TV do it to get a pat on the back from people off of Social Media, rather than just saying the names how they'd really say them.

It's my explanation as to why I agree with you that it's pretentious.
