View Full Version : No Swearing on Kent Beach £100 Fine

[Swearing in the Kent seaside towns
of Birchington, Margate, Ramsgate, and Broadstairs
could now land locals with a £100 fine.
A council has been blasted as "draconian" over
new rules which will see enforcement
officers allowed to hand out £100 fines
in a string of seaside towns - for swearing.]

People can just do it in Igbo and Yoruba instead.

…outrage, outrage, grrrrrr, grrrr, grrr…

…it seems to be a general anti social behaviour fine because locals have been discouraged from using the beaches and expressed their concerns…one of the things is abusive language and general abuse being shouted out and those who are enjoying the beaches finding it off putting and intimidating…I'm not sure how workable it is etc…

How can they enforce this?, it's not really the same as ...say dropping litter and getting a fine for that. People will still swear.

It's against your human rights, so this could get interesting

I wouldn’t care so much. As it doesn’t sound enforceable at first.
But you know in a years time there will be a private company sending people to the beach with voice recorders to listen for swearing and then handling out on the spot fines.
And then when you don’t pay it £100 quickly becomes £1000, and more.

it's an interesting way for the councils to raise money. However, how do they decide what a swear word is, because people can be very inventive. Does it also apply to foreign languages? fooking bar stewards the lot of them

Do one.. 3rd party officers have absolutely no right to your details. Tell them to log the complaint down if they want and return the form back to the council where they will still be paid for the log even if it has no details of the offenders name on the log..if you want to be extra cheeky, tell them to **** off back to the council.

They will collect every penny. Even£20 fines turn exponential and result in court appearances if not paid.

Unless the enforcement officer is a copper - and it won't be, the police are busy with other, more important stuff - no one is compelled to give their name. How are they going to enforce it if they don't know the name of the "offender"?

Fining people for using words is straight out of Orwell's 1984.

I think they've got bigger fish to fry right now. They don't turn up when people are burgled I doubt this will by high on their list of priorities.

And hopefully the grass will get ostracized from society.

Anyone encouraging dystopian policies like this deserves that outcome.

An old biddie in kent will have a lot more flowery language than the youth of today thinks they have.
