[American comic Reginald D Hunter is
embroiled in an anti-semitism row after
Israeli couple are hounded by
'pro-Palestine' audience at his gig
who told them to 'F. off' in the
'ugliest Edinburgh Fringe moment ever'

Reginald D Hunter made a joke
comparing Israel to an abusive husband
An Israeli couple objected only to
be jeered and sworn at by the audience]

[The incident has provoked outrage
among some social media users,
who describe it as 'awful' and 'anti-semitic'.

One wrote: 'His behaviour was abhorrent - but
what was the audience thinking by
abusing two strangers who happened
to be Israeli? Hateful, toxic, repellent stuff.'

Another posted: 'So disappointing that
someone who is from a minority doesn't
empathise with (in fact encourages) racism
towards another minority.'

A third said: 'If your gags are at the expense of
[a] bullied minority,
you're not a comedian - you're a bully.']

Was he intending for it to be a joke?

Because we do know that some Anti-Semitic people do love to disguise their prejudice by either hijacking the "anti-Israel" or "it was just a joke bro" camps.

Yes in his script.

He should have sorry
that joke was out of place.

Some People will now Reject him
He should have thought about his script more.

….the power of words is becoming weightier and weightier and that’s been reinforced so much over the last few weeks…what’s that expression…’careless words cost lives…’…and his words were careless and ‘in the name of comedy’ doesn’t change that carelessness..

If it's a joke then he isn't a problem imo.

I think that we have to be careful with this line of thinking, because it's a slippery slope.

I mean Comedy as an artform is already struggling, the last thing we need to be doing as a society is censoring more jokes.

You have to wonder at his motive, maybe he thought there would be no jews in the audience and he would have been cheered to the rafters, instead he got the ugly face of humans

I think in this case it does fall under the realms of comedy. The previous instance was where the performer actually asked jewish people to leave the room. That was anti semitic.

He made a joke about Israel, not Jews in general. How did the couple object, I wonder?

Tough!

If the intention is to be funny (and there's no malice remotely intended) then the people getting mortally offended are the problem in my view.

Just to clarify, these people have every right to not find a joke funny, but that's where it should end.

originating from the Israelites of the ancient Near East,[15] and whose traditional religion is Judaism

The Israelites emerged from within the Canaanite population to establish the Iron Age kingdoms of Israel and Judah

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jews

true that you have jewish people everywhere across the world, but they are originally from Israel

i don't disagree with you Livia this time around, as most jewish people outside Israel aren't directly related to Israel, but everyone knows their culture's history

So all Jews are Israelis. Right. Thanks for explaining what a Jew is for me.

Can't tell if the title is misleading poster? The events described in the post are not what your title says.

Your title says, he wanted Jews to leave his show.

The story you described is that he made the joke (which people may find offensive or not, that's the nature of a comedy show) and some people in the crowd objected, and then they were jeered, harrassed, threatened and hounded by others in the audience -- which is terrible, and shouldn't happen, however, a performer on stage isn't in control of the actions of their audience and it's daft to suggest otherwise.

Now I haven't seen any clips so I don't know if he DID actually say that Jews weren't welcome and should leave... I'm still entirely in the dark about that...

I just know that a crowd turning on people and forcing them to leave, is not even in the same ballpark as a performer telling a demographic of people to leave/not attend.

There's more to this story!!!

(Apparently, according to a forum about tittletattle and gossip)

The Hebrew names the couple used were false, and they have (more/) English sounding names. They couple are sort of like legal ambulance-chasers, and he is friends with serial liar Jack Monroe, so birds of a feather and all that.

(That doesn't mean the guy isn't antisemitic, obviously)

Sure
But simply because of His response
to a Jewish couple in the front seats
his shows are getting cancelled
