Followed by launching on the floor. Yes, go on, set the rest of the house on fire.

lid on it, cut off the oxygen supply, and i'd more take it outside i think and then use sand to extinguish it completely, i mean the food is ruined already anyway, burned food is never good for you

Even though I should just let you burn your house down for your rudeness Cherie...
... please don't put a wet teatowel on an oil fire, if the wet towel goes into the oil it'll flash boil and coat you in burning hot oil. It's better than throwing actual water on it (boom :omgno: ) but you don't want water anywhere near.
The right answer for this unfortunately is that if you don't have a powder fire extinguisher or fire blanket your best bet is as Nicky says, try to get a lid on the pot and get it off the heat.
Or get it off the heat when it started smoking several minutes earlier 'cos oil fires don't start that fast :umm2:.

I'm confused. The advice always used to be use a ringed-out damp towel.
It happened in the Big Brother 1 house in 2000.

They used a towel there to smother the fire - can't see if it was wet or not though.

I think it was a fire blanket (dry).

So I have put the fire out with the wet tea towel, no need to run from the building screaming :hee:

NO CHERIE
if the damp towel falls into
the pan of hot oil
it will flash-boil
and the oil will spray everywhere
possibly igniting if there's an ignition source
but definitely melting your skin off
if it gets all over you
which is likely if you were close enough to throw the wet dish cloth.
For a general pan fire or even a frying-pan fire it's probably fine but definitely not a deep pan of hot oil/fat. :worry:
Genuinely though everyone should have a fire blanket & small powder fire extinguisher, they're cheap and they can save your life :nono:.
