You should stop buying one

They are thugs
Took a woman with leaning difficulties to court fined her and gave her a criminal record

She had no control of her finances and was considered a vulnerable adult

You only actually need one if you watch live TV or catch up programmes on BBC iPlayer.

Have one, but I'm not the payer/homeowner. Never ever had one the whole of my life when responsible for paying one. Never went as far as court or Fines. Lots of letters, just binned them.

No, I don't.

Every two years I sign a 'I do not watch live TV online declaration'.

The reason is I haven't watched 'any' TV my home for 10 years.

The only exception is Big Brother which I record, or watch at a friend's house.

The declaration allows you to record TV. ;)

But on the whole, TV today is utter krap.

No. Literally no chance am i paying those scammers. Think about this, BBC sell programmes all over the world, they run ads all over the world. They have a major stake in more than half the freeview channels, most of which run about 8 mins worth of ads per 30 mins. And lets not even get started on the people they employ, and pay millions.

Yes, I do.

I have thought about cancelling it before because I don't watch live TV shows anymore, apart from football and things like the Olympics.

I use the BBC news, sport and weather apps and sites, but you don't need the licence fee for those (and there are alternatives).

bots

it frustrates me because the only thing i watch live is the football which has nothing to do with the BBC.

These days, anyone on benefits shouldn't have to pay for it, OAP's shouldn't have to pay for it. People that choose to watch alternative programs to the BBC shouldn't have to pay for it

This charter was set when the BBC was the sole broadcaster, it's just not a realistic proposition today to make it a mandatory charge to watch live TV

So, similar to here  OTA (over-the-air) is free and we have a lot of options (at least here), but there are a ton of ads. Traditional Network TV isn't low quality, though. There's filler channels, but during the prime block is when most "good" TV is on anyway.

If however someone picks up a Cable subscription, they can charge the provider, so they do get back for people who buy it as part of their cable package. There are "public" channels that vary by location, that rely more on donations to get programming. Funny you mention it, a lot of that programming are from sources, such as the BBC, and are funded by donations.

We also have a religious channel, Spanish-only channels. No fee as long as you use an antenna to access it.

It does seem odd that it is "just" to the BBC. Maybe it is seen as a net good that so much of British programming makes the airwaves across the world, maybe encouraging tourism and improving the national "brand". I don't hear about the BBC as much now as I used to, however. Especially not now. Brit content can seen anywhere.

I think it was odious that they started to charge the elderly so they could continue overpaying some truly awful people.
