Actress Dame Maggie Smith, known for the Harry Potter films and Downton Abbey, has died at the age of 89, her family has said.
A statement from her sons Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin said: "It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith.
"She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September. An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.
"We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days.
"We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time."

RIP Maggie. British institution and a proper legend.

Damn. I know for a lot of people here, she'll probably be best remembered for a number of classy period dramas and whatnot, but for me she'll always be Professor McGonagall. R.I.P.

Morbidly though, I have to admit that everytime I saw her I wondered how long she had left.

In 1971, Smith was conferred an honorary doctor of letters (DLitt) by the University of St Andrews.[113] In 1986, she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters (DLitt) from the University of Bath.[114] In 1994, Smith received an honorary Doctor of Letters (DLitt) from the University of Cambridge.[115] In October 2017, Smith was conferred with an honorary fellowship of Mansfield College, Oxford.[116]

Over her career she was recognised by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the following performances:[citation needed]

She also received a Tony Award, four Primetime Emmy Awards, five British Academy Film Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and five Screen Actors Guild Awards. In 1993, she was awarded with the BAFTA Special Award by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.[7] In 1996, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts presented her with the BAFTA Fellowship, the highest honour the Academy can bestow.[117][7] At the 2010 Laurence Olivier Awards, she was celebrated with the Society of London Theatre Special Award. In 2013, she was awarded with the Evening Standard Icon Award.[118]

She was awarded the Shakespeare Prize by the Hamburg Alfred Toepfer Foundation in 1991.[119] Smith was made a Fellow of the British Film Institute in recognition of her outstanding contribution to film culture in 1992.[120] She was elected to the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1994. In 1995, she was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award by Women in Film and Television UK.[121][122] On 10 April 1999, Smith received the William Shakespeare Award for Classical Theatre (The Will Award) presented by the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C., in recognition of her significant contribution to classical theatre in the US.[123] On 9 February 2014 she was inducted into the Actors Hall of Fame.[124] Smith had a star on the London Avenue of Stars until all of the stars were removed in 2006.[125] In September 2012, she was honoured with the Stratford Shakespeare Festival's Legacy Award. She accepted the award, presented to her by Christopher Plummer, in a ceremony at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel.[126] In March 2016, Smith was awarded the Critics' Circle Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts.[127] In April 2016, she was awarded the Bodley Medal by the University of Oxford's Bodleian Libraries in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the performing arts

RIP to a fantastic actress, one of the all-time greats.

She died on the first anniversary of Michael Gambon's (Dumbledore) death too. A spooky coincidence indeed.

…I’d forgotten that we’d lost two Dumbledores and was only looking at the cast of Philosopher’s Stone with Richard Harris as Dumbledore …Michael Gambon as well, though…and interestingly he died on 27 September last year which is exactly one year to the day of Maggie Smith dying….
