View Full Version : Do “social smokers” count as proper smokers to you?

In a world of vapes and-then-some, this question’s bordering on genuinely antiquated in 2024 but blatantly cigarette-smokers are still in existence in some frequency. Question is, do you buy into the social rhetoric of “social smoking” [and/or the introverted equivalent (i.e., I’ll ask for one and smoke it quietly in the corner over a pint while I strategise internally/people-watch)]? Or does your opinion fall more into the “listen, yeah, if you smoke, you smoke, innit?” category?

i think it depends on how frequently you are smoking. If you are out at the pub with friends on the weekend and you have a couple cigs with your drinks then i dont think so.

Social smokers are the worst of the worst.. always poncing fags, and never able to look cool when smoking it.

Likely more depends on the frequency of smoking for me.
Odd times would obviously be different to a compulsive smoker.

I've never ever smoked so hardly an authority on smoking.
However I've never minded people smoking at all.

Depends for me really. I used to be a social smoker (this was when I was cutting down mind) and I would go out and buy my own cigs. I would definitely have put myself in the proper smokers category but people that just ponce fags in smoking areas of clubs to try and fit in (and for anyone that does this, it’s very blatant what you’re doing) then I’d say no.

What is social about standing outside the back door of a pub or restaurant in a dinghy alleyway in the drizzle?

I’d say yeah but I’m no expert in smoking

I enjoy a cigarette with a drink…probably smoke 20 a week (that doesn’t mean I have 20 drinks )

Some of the most irritating people on the planet when they never have their own because 'I only smoke when I drink' so will just pinch cig after cig instead

I was never a regular smoker - one or two a day - but would always make sure I had my own pack
