[The Irish actor Brendan O’Carroll
has apologised over a “clumsy” joke
where a “racial term was implied”
during rehearsals for the upcoming
Christmas special of Mrs Brown’s Boys.

The BBC temporarily paused rehearsals
to investigate the incident,
but they have since resumed
at the broadcaster’s Pacific Quay studios
in Glasgow – with shows going
ahead as planned,
the PA news agency understands.

Mrs Brown’s Boys creator and
star O’Carroll, 69, will return to his
role as mischievous matriarch
Agnes Brown in the Christmas Day
and New Year’s Day specials.

O’Carroll said in a statement given
to PA: “At a read-through of the
Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas specials,
there was a clumsy attempt at a joke
in the character of Agnes,
where a racial term was implied.]

Something that didn't make it beyond a table-read doesn't need to be news.

Many want his show,

Thats the real problem

…it’s not my thing at all in terms of comedy but that’s by the by…Brendan O’Carroll made a racist joke to his colleagues and all filming is halted because of that, with all of the finance investment and planning and scheduling that’s involved etc…?…it feels as though there’s more to this story than is being reported…well wait and see..

….hmmmm, that’s why it has a feeling of not being a complete story…

It depends on the intent for me.

Was meant in a malicious way, or is it like in White Chicks where the white girls start singing the N-word because it's apart of the lyrics to a song that they were singing?

I don't know what Mrs. Browns Boys humour is meant to be like.

It was along the lines of

(and this is in the character of Mrs Brown) "I know people call a spade a spade but I call a spade a ni...... "and then a cast member interrupted and I guess they all gasped or laughed

It sounds kind of similar to a Mr. Garrison joke on South Park.

I hate that programme with a passion, I am sure the BBC are trolling Irish people putting on Christmas Day specials

Good, hope the show gets cancelled, the stereotyping and dumbing down of Irish people is so bad.

Who even watches this trash? One of the worst programmes to ever be made, and the fact it’s still going.

Who even watches this trash? One of the worst programmes to ever be made, and the fact it’s still going. There's people exactly like you who say the same thing about Big Brother.

So why do you still watch that Big Brother trash, even after the amounts of racism in it?

Mrs Browns Boys is the most unfunny thing to have graced television. Big Brother isn’t the best thing on TV but it has its moments.

4 million tuned in last year, I guess its hard to account for tasteThat's over 3 million more than tune in to Big Brother. I think that makes Big Brother much bigger trash than Mrs Brown's boys in the publics eye.

We've got a fan of Mrs Brown in our midst! :hehe:Not really. Never really watched it. Have tried, but it did nothing for me.

A good sitcom has been very rare for the past 10 to 15 years. The take offence at everything generation has destroyed the sitcom and comedy in general. I'm just standing up for the sitcom, because historically, I'm a sitcom lover.

Just because more people watch it, doesn’t mean it’s not trash. ;)

Just because more people watch it, doesn’t mean it’s not trash. ;)But you like trash. Because there's not much more trashy than Big Brother.

So I don't think being trashy is your problem with it.

But I think it is trash. I’m allowed my opinion on it, as is everyone.

Alf

But I think it is trash. I’m allowed my opinion on it, as is everyone. Why should you be allowed your opinion, if your opinion offends Mrs Brown's boys fans?

Are you saying, offending people is OK and shouldn't be illegal?

If they’re offended because I think it’s trash they need to get a life and find better things to be offended by.

Alf
20-10-2024, 10:07 AM
If they’re offended because I think it’s trash they need to get a life and find better things to be offended by.And if they're a offended by a joke in a comedy show?

Benjamin
20-10-2024, 10:20 AM
And if they're a offended by a joke in a comedy show?

If it’s a racist joke (as apparently it is in this case) then that is fair to be offended. Someone saying something is bad (trash) is very different to someone saying something racist. Not sure why I’m having to explain that to you, nor am I going to engage further in doing so.

Ammi
20-10-2024, 10:27 AM
…it wasn’t something which was part of the show, it was something said on set…so essentially it was an employer action of investigating the actions/words of an employee and suspending the show while that took place as many employers in many fields of work may equally do and that’s their judgement call if they feel something warrants it…

Alf
20-10-2024, 10:52 AM
So the person was offended then. Not oppressed, but offended.

Being offended is not racism, if it was then I've suffered racism on this forum.

If somebody else had said the same thing they would have been out on their arse.
Another case of the show has good viewing figures so he gets away with it.

…I’m not sure if it’ll continue or not, smudgie…or if the Christmas Special will be completed…(..I think…)…so far as I’m aware, that’s what talks are atm…
