View Full Version : Big Brother in anti-Semitism row over Ali’s T-shirt

BIG Brother was at the centre of an anti-Semitism row yesterday after a housemate wore a T-shirt depicting a map of Israel as a watermelon.
The symbol, widely associated with anti-Israel sentiment, sparked claims ITV was allowing “genocidal” views to be broadcast to millions of viewers.
https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/big-brother-contestant-wearing-t-943175225.jpg?strip=all&w=720
The Campaign Against Antisemitism complained to Ofcom and said last night: “How is this becoming the norm?”
It added: “This graphic has caused significant distress among the British Jewish community, who regard it as a genocidal message similar to the slogan ‘From the River to the Sea’, which calls for the elimination of the world’s only Jewish state.
“How did the show’s staff allow this shirt to be worn, let alone broadcast it on national television?
"This incident represents a serious violation of broadcasting standards.”
Contestant Ali Bromley, a forensic psychologist, wore the controversial T-shirt in the garden of the Big Brother house.
Viewers were in shock at the T-shirt being screened, branding it “vile” and “despicable”.
Zalman Muhammad said: “This is harmful, and she needs to go.”
Another viewer said: “She’s a horrible nasty piece of work. Smiling assassin.”
The episode was pulled off ITVX on Tuesday night, before being re-uploaded to the site on Wednesday.
A tweet from ITVX today said: "Thank you for reaching out to us today. Hope you are well.
"Regarding your question about last night's Big Brother show, we have some news, it will be available to view later this evening.
"We apologise for the inconvenience caused by this but the wait will be worth it."
Watermelons have been a symbol of Palestinian nationalism dating back decades.
They have seen a resurgence during Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas in Gaza.
The fruit is linked with Palestinian activism because their colours - red, black, white and green - match the colours of the Palestinian flag.
That symbol became widespread during the decades when Israel banned the waving of the Palestinian flag in Gaza and the West Bank.
Actress Jennifer Garner’s daughter wore a sweatshirt with the watermelon cut into the shape of a map earlier this year.
The group StopAntisemitism took offence at the map - meant to display the shape of Palestine - saying that it “erases the entire country of Israel,” envisioning a Palestinian state in the territory that now encompasses Israel, the West Bank and Gaza.
Before Big Brother, Ali said she was looking forward to "just being away and thrown into a totally new environment, completely different to anything I’ve done before, completely different to anything I’ll ever do in the future".
She said: "I think the fact that I’m a forensic psychologist will surprise people.
"It’s not your everyday, typical nine-to-five office job. It’s quite difficult, it’s quite demanding, and I work in highly stressful situations."
She continued: "But I’m quite chilled and probably don’t look like the sort of person who can hold my own – in a prison, for example."
Last week, Big Brother sparked a furore when narrator Marcus Bentley announced: “Daze and Khaled are in the bedroom discussing Palestine.”
The production team was accused of prejudices as the duo were in reality discussing Israel and the wider Middle East when Daze said:
“Actually, if you, like, boil it down, no one should be killed like this. It’s, like, not OK, regardless of the situation.”
The Sun has approached Big Brother for comment.

The Ryan spoon comment, just shows you're not allowed to say anything these days. I'll be honest ...I didn't even see her t-shirt as anything political/ controversial ,it just looked like a watermelon,I've seen a ton of watermelon design in clothing which are innocent enough. But the problem now is ...is wearing a watermelon now seen as some secret political statement? .
In Ali's case she's known to do this ...as she will likely be very 'pro Palestine' , but maybe the outrage wouldn't have been the same if another housemate wore that same t-shirt.
BB producer's removing the episode from ITVX was OTT .

…I guess for anyone who was aware of a connection with watermelon then they may be drawn to it in terms of the shape as well and realised immediately…but not so for anyone who wasn’t aware because all we would see is a watermelon on a t shirt which in itself has no political slant at all…it’s the shape that’s the indicator, isn’t it…

This isn't the place for such discussions.
Why don't you take it to serious debates?

The thread is clearly about this discussion. This discussion is surely what Ali wanted to create by wearing it? The discussion being had is directly related to the show.
Police someone else, I'm not interested.

The whole season was set up to be political.. From Nathan to Khaled to Daze to Ali... Some suggesting we can't have discussions here around those issues is missing half the show as intended by the producers is ridiculous.
Can I just say here also that the production team examine all the clothing of the HMs before they go in. They allowed the shirt to go through and they allowed it to be shown on screen. This was all intentional.

Palestine has no weapons, food, resources, nothing, it's not an equal fight. People are eating tins of cat food.
Yes Jess
it is terrible, a living hell
Ch4HDnews 7PM every night.
But The Terrorists, Hamas
who run that nation
Murdered thousands of peaceful Jews
on Oct 7th last year.

That's cause their dead ex leader and his wife and all their cronies have been hiding down tunnels with all the money for months upon months..

Hamas are just a drop in the water compared to the average Palestinian though, innocent people should be spared but even schools and hospitals have been destroyed with people in them and Hamas not involved.

I suspect this tee shirt was worn with no political conviction at all. So many people making tenuous political statements on the Israel/Hamas conflict don't know the first thing about the conflict.

I can't stop discussions I just suggested because it then turns away from Ali wearing the t shirt to the actual war itself. It's a rabbit hole

Yeah I think you could be right.
I know very little and it dates back a long time that it's complicated.

While I agree that she has no political convictions past performatively showing her chums that she is on the 'right side of history', she was doubtless well aware of the significance of the symbol, as were the BB production team.

She definitely was. I'll admit it went right over my head but Ali has openly said she wants to get into activism so I'm quite sure she knew what the symbol meant politically

I agree she knew what the symbolism was and that it would be provocative. That doesn't mean she has a clue about what she's supporting, or why.
I mean this discussion just shows why ITV had to edit it. A lot of people are complaining about them censoring things or being cowardly etc. but ultimately they're a major broadcaster with a reputation to protect and guidelines to follow. That has to come above all else really and regardless of your views on the conflict it's not a hill worth dying on for ITV

I've noticed ITV care more about reputation than BBC.

Really ironic her wearing that and the person she hasn't bothered to get to know is Palestinian.

weelll I think if you are sporting a tshirt that promotes a whole nation being wiped out then Jews have a right to be offended dont you think? if it were the other way round and she was wearing a tshirt that promoted Palestine being wiped out dont you think they would have a case to be offended? Many Israelis do not support Netanyahu they dont deserve to be wiped out?
Thats like saying during the Iraq war which most Britons didnt agree with that the UK should have been wiped out ...no?
To me it's a T-Shirt, a horrible one that I personally don't agree with Ali on.
But I do think that she is entitled to wear it without the Jewish community (or anyone for that matter) calling for censorship or her removal from the Show.
I am a big freedom of speech advocate, it would have to take something exceptionally extreme to break my motto on this, and there are a few things out there that can break my motto.
Because to me there's a difference between being offended by something, and complaining about it to a point ITV decides to censor the segment.

I don't know anyone who supports Palestine that wants to wipe out Israel, where are people getting that idea? We just want a ceasefire.
It's the Hamas supporters that pretend to be Palestine supporters that some people are thinking of I believe.
Because unfortunately, Hamas has hijacked this conflict unfortunately, which doesn't help matters between the two countries.

There's rare excuses for censorship, and imo this isn't one of them.

I've seen this said online a few times and it's a bizarre mindset. She supports Palestine which means she has to get along with any and every Palestinian person she meets, otherwise her stance is insincere? That's an absolute reach.
She would probably allow your children's genitals to be mutilated as well if she had her way.

Didn't you know? As someone who supports gay rights I have to like every single gay person I meet otherwise my support means nothing. That's how this works
