Do you believe in spiritual signs?

So I ventured out on this very cold morning, it's minus 3 degrees here! Eek!

I wanted to go to the CO OP bakery section, it's only a ten minute walk so not too bad. Got chocolate croissants for our breakfast.

Anyway, to get to the point of the thread...on the way back I cut through the little park and saw a man walking his dog. A springer spaniel just like the one we had as children, and the eyes were almost identical. So that tugged at my heartstrings but then even more was to come. The dogs name was Patrick which was my dad's name.

I truly believe I've been sent a sign. Some may scoff and say coincidence. But I believe. My dad died on Christmas Eve, so it's not that long away.

When my Grandad worked, he was a grave digger for a big cemetery in Manchester and I asked him once if he was scared when he was there and it was dark. He always sadi "don't be scared of the dead kiddo, its the living that hurt you". He always said when he died he would come back if possible to let us know he was ok. I **** myself when he did die and didn't sleep for weeks after thinking I'd wake up and he'd be sat on the end of my bed :laugh: My mum planted a memorial rose bush in her garden when he died and it always bloomed on his birthday - no matter the weather conditions - and sometimes there would be a smell of cigarette smoke near it (no-one in my house smoked but he smoked like a chimney when he was alive). So i think that was his "sign".

A few years ago I was in a hospital in London waiting for my aunt to get out of surgery, I was killing time and found myself in an empty corridor that looked out over the gardens and suddenly I smelled Old Spice which was the aftershave my Uncle used to wear, he has been dead for some years, I looked around but there was no one at all around ....it was uncanny..... so I would say yes....

We don’t come from the same kind of background at all so you won’t understand anything I have to say about the matter. Different background, completely different experiences. You haven’t seen what I’ve seen in that regard or had some of the exposure to different types of people that I have, and it’s not even close or up for debate. There are so many sub-cultural nuances here that you can’t even begin to understand. We come from completely different worlds.

Same here. I couldn’t imagine living a life that’s as spiritually seasoned as a plate of chicken nuggets. It’s like heavenly manna of Yahweh in the form of maple-and-cherry-smoked coconut jollof rice cooked with duck, venison, goose and copious amounts of crayfish served with foie gras with charoset and hamentashen for afters meets a ham buttie that’s convinced that ham, bread and a smattering of butter is the only way to live and feast.

One thing that’s always apparent in discussions like this is how one-sidedly intolerant people operate of experiences they have no awareness of or don’t want to understand. On this forum it rarely starts the other way around. It’s always people who lack any kind of spiritual conviction whatsoever taking the piss out of people who believe, calling them mad, fake pretenders. It's a true story, I havnt seen akin for years but he still messages me at certain times of year with some kind words. He will never know how much it helped me.

I can't speak to the UK, but in the US most people now are exposed to watered down spirituality, or commercial "woo". In TX mega churches are a major thing and it's like religion from within a mall :spin:... but the worst variant is the Hollywood variant of "woo"—which I hate with the energy of a million burning suns... that all gets mixed into everything else, including our medical/mental health ... I had a friend who fell for that tripe through therapy and it messed him up very badly (though he was already messy). So while it's largely for people who prefer the appearances of seeming to be spiritual and deep thinking, there's escapist aspects to that, but they don't actually have any grounding in anything...... so many people see the messiness and think it is all performance surrounding narcissistic personality. I do not blame them one bit.

Skepticism though is obviously very healthy, and when not tinged in hubris it's better to err on the side of caution. And I really do prefer that to seeing people fall into schemes. It causes so much needless suffering... unfortunately there is a toxic side where people seek endless quick fixes and it leads to years of pain, whether that's through pills or "therapy". There is good therapy out there, but good God is it hard to find... and obviously that exists in religions as well... but in vast majority of cases, religious institutions... or better yet, "churches"... that don't have denominations and have weirdly California-like descriptors of what they do... they mostly appeal to dabblers, but it's the dabblers who get pulled into actual cults like Scientology...

Anyway, I knew a Yoruban priest years back from NY. In Houston and in the South in general, because of the obvious Latin American connection, we mostly see Yoruban religion in the form of Santeria. I went through an Occult course (for fun and curiosity) at the police academy with hub as a guest and they go through these things that way people aren't making certain assumptions when they answer calls... (and they learn that much of it is harmless)
