Man behind Jaguar’s new woke rebrand is BLM supporting American designer
who has bragged about establishing ‘over 15 DEI groups' at the car maker.
Santino Pietrosanti previously boasted about his push for diversity at Jaguar
saying:
“We're passionate about our people and we're committed to fostering a diverse
inclusive and unified culture that is representative of not only the people who
use our products but in a society in which we all live.”

I was reminded of a pretentious Dunlop tyres advert in the 90s that won lots of advertising awards.
Only problem was that it did nothing to help sales.

Watching it back, they did actually show the product though.

Nah other than Facebook, Google and Microsoft (and the latter two of those mainly because the logos were classics) ... all of the new logos in this image are better than the old ones, which are simply dated, nothing to do with "wokeness".
That is Jaguar aside though. Their new font doesn't fit a car brand at all. As for the advert, it's ... a miss. Misjudged. We'll say that.
I don't think there's any harm in them going for a new market - as much as the believers who are convinced Trump is going to live forever believe that they as puffy faced blokes with beer bellies are going to be the world's core spending power forever ... they are not, and if Jaguar don't find a core market outside of recently-divorced men in middle management, they're going to go bust.
That said...
...I'm not sure what market they are going for here, or that this market is ever going to be buying a Jag.

…that’s the thing, though…who can recall ads now…we spend so much time watching catch up so that we don’t have to watch those ads and then there are screams that they’re not good ad…it feels like any televised ad for any company is not a good use of advertising budget…

What's so "woke" about it? The fact that black people are in it?
It's hilarious how we have gotten to a point where the word "woke" is so overused it has literally become meaningless and if anything it has just became a dog whistle for the Karen's and Keith's to express their frustration every time something doesn't resemble 1930's Germany.

Here you go... from Urban Dictionary:
...the original meaning is slowly fading and instead, is used more often to term someone as hypocritical and think they are the 'enlightened' despite the fact that they are extremely close-minded and are unable to accept other people's criticism or different perspective. Especially considering the existence of echo chamber(media) that helped them to find other like-minded individuals, thus, further solidifying their 'progressive' opinion.

Yes I think it would be fair to call it "aesthetically woke" in what the visual is definitely intended to evoke. I don't think that makes the advertising in itself woke.
You could maybe call the apparent shift from fuelled cars to electric "woke"... once upon a time... a bit more difficult to do so now that the incel-king face most associated with electric vehicles is the same one permanently buried between Donald Trump's arsecheeks.
Your average anti-woke-bloke loves a bit of Musk / X so they can't really be all that against the odd electric car here and there.
We all know what they mean when they say "woke", they just don't have the balls to say what they mean out loud because then it's harder for them to pretend they aren't racist.

Tbf I don't think this is actually accurate - when the whinging about "wokeness" starts, it's generally in reference to anything "LGBT-coded".
Generally.
In the case of this advert when they guffaw and grumble they're talking about the clothes and hairstyles. Not the diversity in race.
In this case.
Dont get me wrong they are also often racist - LT especially enjoys a little race bait dogwhistle on TiBB, though I feel like he's lost the passion for it lately because people got wise to that schtik.
But for this ad I genuinely don't think it was about race.

The advert is an exercise in social engineering.
They're saying. This is what the World ought to look like. Because we, a collection of self-subscribed social outcasts, marginalised people, people who are not ordinary, and would like to delete ordinary. We want our ailing consciences and our insecurities soothed.
So we have to make everything, even if it's not related to us, about us.
And I stole the above view, because I thought it was spot on.

I would agree that they should focus on cars but advertising has a long long history of advertising products without actually advertising the product, and it's often done very successfully. For example, the Cadbury's adverts with the kids with the crazy eyebrows and the gorilla playing the drums. Budweiser's "Whassup!" adverts, beer and alcohol adverts that feature attractive people on holiday but no actual beer. Advertising is often about selling a feeling rather than the product itself. If you can sell a feeling, the product sells itself.
I'm not saying that I think this Jaguar advert is even done very well, I just think constantly resorting to the "woke" card every time something isn't 100% white is just tiring and has become a dog whistle for racists.
Glenn.

So we'll give you another chance... what's so "woke" about it?
As SB rephrased from my post, it has the "woke aesthetic" where everyone is deliberately unattractive, but the content or storyline isn't woke. If it were redone in the exact same way with the same racial makeup, but with super models in revealing clothing, no-one would call it woke.

That's one theory but I'm not sure I agree. There have been many occasions where adverts or films etc with conventionally attractive POC have been called "woke" because of their skin colour. In fact it happens a lot. Hence why I call it a dog whistle. Users like Alf know that they can't just come out and say what it is they don't like about what they see on TV, so they go for the option to call it "woke" so they can pretend like that's not what they meant. It doesn't work on anyone though.
Plus, if all models that were cast in this advert had been white but ugly as sin, there's no way it would have been called "woke", I just don't think that's realistic. We all know what "woke" means to these people in 2024, it means diverse.
Appreciate you actually having a conversation in good faith though and not just avoiding the question like the plague.

I think that you make some fair points in your post.
And to answer your question, my definition of **** (which I don't know why the word is being censored lol) falls into three categories for me.
1. Deliberately casting ugly people for roles under the guise of being "more realistic" because yes, Karen Gillan, Gal Gadot, and Margot Robbie aren't real, guys. I believe that they're just AI images imprinted into our minds.:joker:
2. Dialogue being incredibly drab, safe, and boring because they're constantly scared of "offending" people.
And 3. When we stop having what I call the BBUK level of diversity, which I think was quite well balanced this series imo.
We instead have to have every identity all in one Show just for the sake of having them in the Show, and that includes the white straight male role too, I just want to see people that fit whatever Show that they're in.
That's the three criterias where I judge something as ****.

Potentially... it's going everyone talking about it I guess so in some respect it's great marketing. But it's a risky move to do to such an iconic brand.

Maybe you should contact the newspapers, I think you'll find they're the ones who started the whole woke furore that everyone's so upset about. I imagine 'woke' refers to extreme political correctness, not necessarily just a black/white racist thing. But I responded to the story, I didn't come up with the word 'woke' in connection to it, neither did my fellow forum members.
I'm surprised you don't every hear anyone using the word 'woke'. It's out there, everywhere.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woke
meaning of the word in a wikipedia article
has since the 1930s or earlier been used to refer to awareness of social and political issues affecting African Americans, often in the construction stay woke. Beginning in the 2010s, it came to be used to refer to a broader awareness of social inequalities such as racial injustice, sexism, and denial of LGBT rights. Woke has also been used as shorthand for some ideas of the American Left involving identity politics and social justice, such as white privilege and reparations for slavery in the United States
people are expressing dissatisfaction with the advert. It really doesn't matter how they choose to express that dissatisfaction. The brand Jaguar has an associated image and the advert doesn't reflect the image many people expect. That's the reality

If someone (not you) is going to parrot what the press and media say without expanding on their actual thoughts then I think it's only fair to ask them to expand what they mean. They are not obliged to answer, but it's not unreasonable to ask.
The thing is, if you're (not you) going to use words, at least know why you're using them. If you can't explain the definition, which many people who use the term woke can't, then stop using it. And if you don't want to stop, then don't cry when people take you to task.
Maybe you need to log off until you can discuss stuff like a grown up?
How do I argue maturely with someone who evidently seems to have the brain capacity of a child?
The suggestion that lack of comment on a specific tragedy towards a specific race on a specific thread on a specific Big Brother forum is racist, misogynistic and shows lack or care is quite the reach and doesn't particularly deserve to be taken seriously or combated with mature debate.
