So you're happy with this Government? Just a question? Are people not allowed to want anyone but Keir for Prime Minister. He's a disgusting excuse for a human being.

I'm very sure as Annie said, that large numbers of those who signed will be pensioners and farmers?

Should they 'suck it up'?

Wealthy pensioners? Anyone above the threshold for pension credit has lost their winter fuel allowance. So anyone who gets more than just over £11k is wealthy? Not in my book.

Spot on is this

I don't agree with some things the government has done so far
Mainly the pensioners issue

I can tolerate most else.

There's no way 14 years of mismanagement and chaos can be sorted in months
This government was elected to restore continuing growth and invest in and build up public services.
Plus to save and protect the NHS.

If in 3 years signs of that are coming to be in place then that is what they'll really be judged on.
However I do also hope that Kemi Badenoch will be able to diffuse the dangerously divisive time bomb of the Reform Party and the odious creep Farage.
Their bigotry, divisive and destructive rhetoric is the very last thing the UK now needs.

He’s come for wealthy pensioners and wealthy farmers.

When he’s coming to “pile up the bodies” as Boris put it then maybe I will start to be appalled.

Farmers are seldom wealthy. They're only "land rich" in that the land they farm would fetch X amount if they sold it to developers.

Someone inheriting a farm would be inheriting a business where they work a physically demanding job with long hours, and not great pay, so they can feed the nation.

joeysteele

Wealthy pensioners? Anyone above the threshold for pension credit has lost their winter fuel allowance. So anyone who gets more than just over £11k is wealthy? Not in my book.

I agree there should have been a kind of outer ring ceiling for the winter fuel payment.
So I'd have preferred anyone on under 15,000 income a year to still get it.

However I've been assisting done pensioners who didn't think they could get it.
Pensioners I know obviously.
I've found you can have over £220 stste pension as income, a very small private/works pension.
Can own your own home and have up to £10,000 savings.

Then still get pension credit of even just a couple of pound a week.

The Farmers should pay the tax, I've no problem with them being no longer exempt.

However yes, the winter fuel payment is a bad move.
Although I can accept it shouldn't be paid universally to all of pension age.

As for this petition.
Where were these at the time of the cruel bedroom tax, elderly put in danger in care homes during COVID.
Or the hateful.cruel new criteria of assessing the sick and disabled.

Oliver_W
24-11-2024, 05:59 PM
The Farmers should pay the tax, I've no problem with them being no longer exempt.

Why? So they need to sell off their land? So we lose parts of the countryside and deplete our food security?

joeysteele

Why? So they need to sell off their land? So we lose parts of the countryside and deplete our food security?

They haven't properly considered the full package.

Plus Thatcher in the 80s made them exempt from inheritance tax.
This government was elected to try to plug all loopholes in taxation.
So it's right they shouldn't now still be exempt.

I didn't hear Farmers moaning at some pensioners losing the winter fuel allowance.
If anyone else is being penalised, the farmers aren't bothered as long as they can keep exemptions for them in place.

I'm afraid I've little sympathy for the Farmers on this issue.

bots
24-11-2024, 06:27 PM
it really all depends on the financial setup of the farm. If the farm is owned by an individual then it will be subject to the normal inheritance tax rules, which makes perfect sense if it is not a working farm. If the farm is setup as a private business then it will be exempt from inheritance task as all private business is

Funny thing is it's taken Labour years to earn the trust and support of a wider voter base and they've squandered much of it within four months. A lot of people just feel like their suspicions have been confirmed that Labour don't truly care about people beyond their base and have no idea about the reality of people's lives beyond liberal urban areas. Remember atm that these are just announcements that they've made so far - they'll become a lot more unpopular once these policies are actually implemented and start to bite

I don't get how people can't see how dumb this is in concept though. "A million people want the GE overturned!!!"

Well yes nearly 7 million people voted Tory alone so you can assume that at least 7 million people want the GE overturned. Plus all of the Reform voters, and a smattering of others. "Lots of people didn't want Labour to get into power! Millions of 'em!!" is not news it's... erm... election politics?

Labout got a total vote of 9,708,716

Thus

Until there's a petition that says 9,708,717 want a new GE it's not even worth taking vaguely seriously.

And if 10 million people signed it that still wouldn't even indicate there'd be a different result on a revote.

And that's without accounting for single individuals signing multiple times - since there are no actual checks to make sure that isn't happening - so it almost certainly is to some degree.

"This poll has taken off faster than any we've ever seen!" folks will say. The simple explanation for that is that it's "gone viral". That's all.

Absolutely, hallelujah for some sense on this.

Some have a weird idea of democracy.
This government, like or dislike it is there with a 160+ overall majority until 2029, if it wishes to be.
No election necessary until around August 2029.
That's how our democracy works.

I have many Conservative friends and I know they certainly don't want another election.
They haven't had time to sort themselves out after this year's yet.

So it is likely more of the Reform near brainwashed lot with their destructive divisiveness wanting this.
I can say with some of the most certainty I could this pathetic and ridiculous petition will be and should be laughed at and dismissed by Parliament.
Democracy doesn't only work when YOU win.
Elections decide and they are set for around every 5 years.
Then change can be enacted if ALL the voters decide that.
Not just some disgruntled millions who cannot accept in the main, defeat.

I doubt many pensioners will sign this really.
Some yes, however certainly the Farmers will.
It's been dared by a government to end their exemption from a tax.
They don't care who else pays it though as long as they're exempt.

It's all over TikTok so will likely be chock full of US / MAGA signatures.

The same folk who are putting up videos stating that Trump has "instructed Prince Charles to overturn the UK election and install Nigel Farage as prime minister with immediate effect" - complete with dramatic music :joker:.

Honestly at this point I'm convinced that it's true... entertainment media has become "too woke". There's not enough on telly to keep a certain demographic entertained with stories that they enjoy, so they're just sort of faffing/playing around nonsensically in the world of politics sharing absolute rot with each other and believing that it means something.

It's not really practical - although in principle I wouldn't be against the idea of meaningful consequences if a party entering power goes back on election pledges/does a complete 180 after getting into power (without being able to give clear reasons that they've done so, and that they couldn't have predicted before making the pledge).

2 million

Meh like I said give us all a nudge when it hits 10 million and they're verified to actually be from people in the UK. Until then it means nothing, other than that it's a well-advertised poll. It's not news that 2 million people want Labour out. More than 2 million people never wanted them in.

Hm, I'd say ~5 million (verified) votes rather than 10 - that's more than of those who voted for Labour.

And even if ten mill did sign the petition, I don't think it would or should lead to an election. But it might nudge Labour to reconsider some of their policies...

Near or over 4,000,000 voted only Reform in July so they're all, or near all, likely to sign this stupid nonsense of a petition.
Because most of them are probably beyond reason.
Only believing in democracy as long as they win.

Not one single party in parliament at present would want another general election I'd say.
Plus until Theresa May revoked it, the Coalition had put in place the fixed term parliament of NO general election held until the end of the 5 year terms.
It's really sad how little it seems that some of the people who do vote, seem to have little idea of democracy in the UK and even in our current electoral system.

The sad reality of election cycle politics is that pretty much NOTHING that happens in the first two years matters - all that matters at all is the two years running up to the election, and all that's of prime importance is the final 1-year stretch leading up to voting day. It's exactly why they're doing all of this unpopular **** now. So long as they can switch to sweeteners for a year or so before the election, that's all people will ultimately care about. And where the Tories fell down. Their final year was one of their messiest.

Labour winning at all - let alone with a large majority - was pretty much unimaginable less than 18 months before it happened. The Tories seemed unshakeable and we were looking like verging on a one-party state. And yet.

They "saw" the books? Their own books? This as a supposition is very optimistic about how the Tories must view Labour, Parmy... because the only way this can be true, is if they believe that Labour will have to take the fall for the bad books (probable) but also relies on them then fixing the books in order for the Tories to re-enter power and take credit. That's the way that cycle works. If they thought the books were unfixable they'd have tried to hold onto power regardless for as long as possible.

I would venture to say that what they saw isnt achievable to come back from. So they stood down knowing labour would blame them at the beginning of their term, but by the end of it(the important months) they public would blame labour for failing to right things, and also remember the necessary bad things at the begining that were only in place to right things.

I would say thw Tories know getting the ship steadied in that space of time is unachievable by then, yet perhaps achievable the following 5 years, after gains have been made the previous 5.

Think there probably is an element of that but that implies they're more coordinated and organised than the reality imo. I think Sunak largely gave up because the writing was on the wall but he's unlikely to be in a position of influence again. There's also lots of big Tories who lost their seats and their livelihoods because of the scale of the defeat. But yeah I think there's a fair few Tories who are very happy to be in opposition now and feel quite optimistic about their future

Labour hadn't been in power for a long, long time. They are drunk on power now. That's why they are behaving the way they are. It's not a good look, but they have the majority to do what they want. Everybody knew what labour would do if they won, but they still voted for them. Everyone knows what Trump will do, but they still voted for him. When the public want a change, they don't think clearly.

The mandate to govern came from the £9.5 million + who voted for Labour, NOT from who voted for other Parties.
This petition is ridiculous, it shouldn't be and IS NOT anything that could be seen as in any way newsworthy.

Didn't labour win the election with 30% ish of the vote? Doesn't that mean you would expect 70% of uk voters to vote for the petition before it even eats in to labour's voting pool?

They got around 35%. the Conservatives got around 24%, Reform got around 14%, LibDems got around 12%.

You are right however which is why this petition is stark raving bonkers.

Remainers went mad when their anti-Brexit petition went viral like this tbf but that was also pretty dumb

Exactly just suggest "shall we do another poll on Brexit?" on the same groups that are spamming this nonsense, and all of a sudden it'll be "Erm no that's not how democracy works that was the result of the vote and must be accepted even if a new vote would go differently". The extra irony being that the reasoning is exactly the same - that pro-Brexit campaigned dishonestly.

It's sort of hilarious to see people currently pretending that governments voted into power "not doing exactly what they said before the vote" is some sort of new phenomenon and invalidates the entire vote... as though it's not been the case with every single government ever elected :idc:.

Swear to god the only difference - ONLY difference - is the dramatic uptick in the number of uneducated or just plain thick, gullible, politically unaware NPC's being given a massive voice by Social Media. That's all that's behind this. Millions of mouth-breathers mindlessly scrolling algorithmic political content and getting off on the outrage.

[edit to add] And just wait for the excuses when Trump doesn't fulfil all of his campaign promises (or even attempt to do so). The list of mitigating reasons will be endless, and 99% of them will no doubt be Joe Biden or some other Blue's fault :joker:.

Good point, I remember previous PMs getting a very hard time for not doing exactly that

They saw the books and gave up (by half arseing the race)...ie, didnt want to win.

Even a toddler can see that.

I don't even live there and it all sounds a mess. Nothing I would want to touch lol

Holding frequent elections undermines the impact of them, so can't say I would sign a petition for it. What circumstances have changed to warrant it outside it just being Labour, etc?

Yes online petitions are easier to game but they have a purpose I suppose...

The government is more interested in giving money to other countries for climate change than caring for their own citizens

the only purpose it serves is to raise a discussion point in parliament, and even then, the government sets the priorities for debates, so it is likely to happen at the close of play next to a weekend when most people have already gone home

If Keir Starmer had said before the election that he would remove the winter
fuel allowance from millions of pensioners, give away £millions of money to
overseas net zero and farming projects while hammering UK family farmers
with inheritance tax, council tax & energy price increases, raise university
tuition fees, plaster mass-scale solar panels on thousands of acres of prime
farmland despite huge local community objections, spaff £22bn of taxpayers’
money on carbon capture machines, give £3bn a year of taxpayers’ money to
Ukraine and ratchet up hawkish warmongering rhetoric, pledge a 20% cut in
meat & dairy and get exposed for receiving over £100,000 worth of freebies -
he almost certainly wouldn’t have won. He duped the electorate. An utterly
shameless display of snake oil political salesmanship. And still he lectures all of
us in that gratingly sanctimonious manner of his like we are all somehow the
problem here.

The petition is pointless.

It's simply labour's turn to be shite for 4 or more years, that's just how it is accepted in the UK.
