I remember watching it every week when it was airing for the first time with my best friend, we were still in school [emoji23]
…oh how weird…I was just reading this story on another site…
“Timing Is Everything”: Lisa Kudrow Finds Note Left By Matthew Perry Inside ‘Friends’ Cookie Jar…
Lisa Kudrow revealed that she recently discovered a note left by the late Matthew Perry inside the Friends cookie jar he gifted her after the show’s finale in January 2004. While Lisa did not disclose the note’s contents, she did reflect on the timing of finding it.
“Matthew gave that to me at the end of our last episode,” Lisa told Drew Barrymore on Tuesday (January 7), appearing in an episode of The Drew Barrymore Show.
Drew had asked Lisa if she had stolen anything from the set of Friends, to which the actress teased that she had, but she didn’t want to say what.
As a result, the host wondered about the fate of the “Cookie Time” jar from the popular sitcom, prompting Lisa to confess to the heartwarming discovery.
“I had recently found the note that he had in it for me,” she explained. “I hadn’t opened it up or looked inside of it. But yeah, he did. He had a note in there and I forgot about it. Timing is everything.”
The 61-year-old Hollywood star previously revealed that the “Cookie Time” jar had been a “wrap gift” from Matthew during a 2020 interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
“I mean we were laughing hysterically and crying because it was the end [of the show],” Lisa said at the time of her response to the gift.
The late actor had gifted the prop to his costar in an ode to a scene from an early episode of the show, where Lisa, who played Phoebe Buffay, realized she wasn’t wearing a watch for a scene that she needed to be, so she referred to the cookie jar as a clock, People reported on Tuesday.
Lisa reportedly recalled being skeptical of how Matthew got the jar to gift it, as she said: “The first thing I asked was, ‘This is so nice. Did you get permission?’
“I mean, my car used to get searched every night when I left.”
The cookie jar on Friends was a decorative prop often seen in Monica Geller’s (Courteney Cox) kitchen, the central hangout spot for the group throughout the show, which aired from 1994 to 2004.
In the Season 4 episode The One with Chandler in a Box, which aired in 1997, Chandler Bing (Matthew) used the jar as part of a humorous moment to prove his loyalty to Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc).
The jar became a nostalgic keepsake for the cast, symbolizing the close bond they shared during the iconic sitcom’s 10-year run.

…I’ll give it a watch with you as well, CeeCee….I did watch some of the first season a while ago and I liked it ok…but I didn’t live it and sitcoms are not usually so much my thing…Friends was quite exceptional but maybe it was just more THAT TIME…I think also with Friends, it was that there were so many traits in them that were in my own Friends or myself, you know…similar with Sex in the City and that friendship group that had some relatable things…anyway, it’s nice to have something lighter to tap in and out of as well so I’ll re-try Schitt’s Creek…I love Catherine O’Hara anyway…
…a recent excellent comedy series I’ve watched the first season of…(…because it’s only one season in…)…is Nobody Wants This, I would totally recommend that one…I just couldn’t put it down until I’d watched the season to the end…

As for the " laugh track ", I remember watching a behind the scenes documentary about friends .And they had a real audience...but they would use a quick short taped laugh track for some of the jokes,as the audience laugher was interrupting the actors next lines, which made sense.
…didn’t Cheers and many other huge sit cons have that live audience at that time…?..it was ‘a thing’…but yeah, I can understand how it can irritate as well…like being told when to laugh…come to think, didn’t things like The Lucy Show, back in the day…have that audience/canned laughter, thing….I mean, the audience had probably sat there for around 75 hours so what else could they do but laugh for their release…

Yeah many sitcoms did both live audience & canned laughter for sure .
…I mean, even now…entertainment shows that have a live audience…?…still have the ‘warm up’ people or person, don’t they…that prep them on audience reaction at specific points…I mean we only have to look at BB crowds…and their boooooo sections and cheer sections and which section will be the loudest…etc…

Nope. I just don't really have any intention of watching sit-coms as I just don't really find them that funny.
I have a very dry sense of humour. Maybe that's why.
In real life people people often tell me I'm hilarious and have no idea why. I don't intentionally go out to try and be funnu
Friends, although may have had a live audience, engineered the laughing. People sometimes laugh just if others are laughing even if it's not that funny.

The episode where Monica and chandler get married is the prime example of this when Chandlers mum asks his dad about having too much penis to be wearing a dress like that. The audience went crazy and for about ten minutes. They had to shorten that.

…I think with Friends, a lot of it for me was that thing of seeing something of your own friends in the character traits…and even some of yourself…I mean, I’m that person that would take all of the freebies/those sampler things home from the hotel room in that episode…Im reformed now but when the boys were younger, they loved getting those if they were at home being looked after by grandparents and we’d been away for a little break…I took back whatever I could for them…I stripped those hotel rooms to the bone…
..and I know so many Monica’s…I also know quite a few Rachel’s as well…

Same. Always dismissed it as corny American rubbish, but when i got with my first girlfriend, i was like 12, i would walk her home from school and go to hers for the evening. Her family watched Friends every Friday night, i think S6 had just started, anyway, i had no choice but watch, after 1 episode i was hooked. Borrowed my girlfriend's sister's VHS box sets and binge watched them to catch up. I feel like S4/5/6 was peak Friends.

There's a few where they had to switch to laugh track,I think the las Vegas one was like that aswell . But I've noticed when I watch some old comedies , including British ones...the laughter sometimes drowns out actors lines which is annoying.
You can tell at times they try to wait for the audience to
stop laughing to deliver their next line, but other times
they just echo over it.

…ahhh, I thought it was a series and the only series that was coming up with that name was like a documentary/follow the Mexican border control, type one…..

Never seen a single episode.
The goat episode will always be the one where they play the game to switch apartments
I love a lot of the later episodes which Ross carries as well - the sandwich, the leather pants, his fake tan. There were some great episodes with him and Mona too like when she finds out Ross got Rachel pregnant and when he's trying to retrieve his 'salmon' jumper

The apartment switches is one of my faves as is Ross’ sandwich.
Also when they all find out about Chandler and Monica which is another great Ross moment

She was a bit up herself though. But yeah Ross didn't have a leg to stand on.

I didn't think the show was as good overall after Monica and Chandler moved in together, although there was still a lot of great episodes.

I agree some of the jokes from friends wouldn't pass today like:
Joey "if homosapians were in fact homo-sapians...is that why they're exctinct?"
Ross stares in disbelief "Joey homosapians are people!"
Joey "hey I don't judge" hahaha this definitely wouldn't fly today. What gets me is the way Matt Leblanc himself couldn't help but snicker a little when he delivered that line :joker:
Definitely the friendship is a strength. Like if one of them left not sure it would have worked as well. They all fit perfectly as a unit.
Ah sex and the city...that episode when they were all at Miranda's mum's? Funeral, is when I really realised that one reason I loved this show was because of the love they each had for each other...not because Samantha was moaning every week about gherkins :nono:
Trying to think if I've watched any funny new sitcoms lately ...
I haven't but the last sitcom that I thought was perfect is Melissa and Joey

Yeah alot was missing from Joey , I always preferred all 6 of them as a unit aswell.
I think the only spin off concept ...which may have worked, would have been Monica & Chandler living in the countryside ,and us seeing them raise their kids. But I still think it would have needed cameos from the other friends cast members to really make it work.
But that idea definitely would have potential. Obviously sadly that's impossible now anyway as Matthew Perry is no longer with us R.I.P. . But if I'm honest I was always more excited about Monica & Chandler's life and the whole ' next chapter ' ,more so than Rachel & Ross or Phoebe & Mike or Joey for that matter.
It was OK, but that's about it. Nothing I could return to.
Very overatted sitcom. For the easilly pleased.
Father Ted, came out around the same time. Father Ted is far superior to Friends.

Fun fact. If you google each character and press the icon each of them has a soundbite from the show. IE Ross Geller, if you click the couch it says "pivot" and the page pivots lol

…Joey’s is a pizza and just goes to food and I guess they were closer in how their characters were portrayed…more ‘superficial’ I guess..but what I loved about Friends is similar to what I love with Schitt’s Creek in how much character development there was from what they originally were presented as…
