[Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has vowed
to ban non-resident Brits from buying homes
in Spain as he desperately tries to tackle
the country's housing crisis]

Local people can no longer afford a new home

It is Airbnb they have caused prices to go up.

[Airbnb uses algorithms to increase prices.
The price of an Airbnb reservation
is based on the nightly price set
by the host, plus fees and taxes.
Airbnb's algorithm considers many
factors to determine the price,
including demand for similar listings,
the popularity of the market and listing,
and the number of positive reviews.]

Last Summer protesters getting nasty.

[Spain's socialist prime minister
has vowed to completely ban
non-resident Brits from buying
homes in the country.
Speaking at a Socialist Party event
in the Extremadura region in
western Spain on Sunday,
Pedro Sanchez said: 'We are going to propose that
these non-EU foreigners, who neither they
nor their families reside here and who
are therefore only speculating with these homes
and houses, be prohibited from buying
them in our country'.

Sanchez's remarks follow on from
his announcement last week of a
12-point programme to tackle a
mounting housing crisis which has
left locals furious with the lack of
available homes.]

It must be irritating to have foreigners buy property then rent them out on airbnb, leaving them empty some of the time, raising property prices for locals. Luckily that doesn't happen here. Right?

Of course
UK has the same problems.

I can understand why he is doing this.

I know, I was tring to be funny...

It happens in my county on a national level. People buy up properties on the north Norfolk coast and they stand empty most of the time. Communities suffer, local businesses suffer... And that's with Brits buying second homes here. I think all second home owners who buy to rent need a kick up the backside financially.

[Anti-tourism protesters have promised
to wreck havoc across Spain this summer
as demonstrations aimed at keeping
holidaymakers out have already
begun to escalate.
Visitors to the party paradise of Ibiza
were left disappointed last month
after a popular viewing point was
dramatically blocked off with boulders
in the latest sign of growing
local resentment towards mass tourism.

The famous Es Vedra viewpoint,
where thousands gather to watch
the sun sink behind the
mountainous island each evening,
is now off-limits after frustrated landowners
declared they'd had enough
of being overrun by crowds.]

…’Kill a Tourist’ graffiti, that’s horrendous…for those who have bought properties in Spain, for many years they were encouraged to do so with things like timeshare etc, which I recall being very ‘hard sell’ to the UK tourist….and some people using all of their savings to buy that holiday home or retirement property…only to now be made very unwelcome, I understand the perspective of Spain but these purchases weren’t discouraged from happening, they were surely largely encouraged…

Obviously its not nice to see a sign like that but again its been blown out off all proportion, currently in Spain and there is no anti tourism sentiment where we are

This is the issue, its young people driven by social media posts who do not run businesses reliant on tourism which is turn gives locals jobs, its up to the Spanish Government to build homes for the Spanish and not sell them on to non Spaniards..though obvs as they are in the EU that could be prolematic for free movement

Benidorm is like Essex lol.

I haven't read all of this properly but can we still go on holiday though? With my black skin can't even pretend to be a local. Should I expect to be arrested then quartered?

It’s a big problem in Tenerife for sure, and there’s often uproar about it all over there.
