Victoria Beckham's latest attempt to establish Brand Beckham in the United States may have backfired.
She said she was not taking herself seriously when she made fly-on-the-wall documentary Victoria Beckham: Coming To America - but television critics described it as an "orgy of self-indulgence".
Linda Stasi from the New York Post took Posh seriously when Beckham said: "I don't want to be seen smiling, or having fun, or eating, perish the thought!"
Stasi wrote: "If this weren't a one-shot deal and people were exposed to her vapid, condescending behaviour on a weekly basis, she'd not just be unwelcome in America, she'd be run out."
Whatever her intentions, Posh seems to have got off on the wrong foot.
The documentary was originally intended as a mini-series but was cut down to a one hour special by the NBC network.
The New York Times was easier on the new LA resident, saying she does seem to have a sense of humour.
But the paper does say: "That isn't quite enough to carry viewers through an hour of house hunting, sunbathing and applying for a driver's licence, all executed with 'Zoolander' pouts and poses."
Whether David Beckham's "relentlessly self-promoting wife" (Stasi again) can get the US media on her side remains to be seen.
But it is clear they are not ignoring her arrival.
