View Full Version : "Making it about other members" in certain cases

Just want to preface this by saying, this is a genuine question and discussion, I'm not being pointed.

The forum's rule (as we all know) is that it's against the rule to "discuss each other" and not the thread topic; this concept unfortunately, in my opinion, runs up against a brick wall in SD's in specific relation to (for recent example) call people out for suspicions of disingenuity or "playing dumb". This is not a character-based ad hominem and is a perfectly legitimate comment to make, in any debate, on any actual debate platform I can think of: it is (or should be) acceptable to say "I think you understand fine well what is being said, and are pretending that it's going over your head to avoid the point" and variations on that sentiment.

In fact, I think it's largely impossible to have any real sort of debate with that being "disallowed". It's a confusing rule in that sense.

I understand the rule (though I may not always stick to it) that you shouldn't make unrelated comments purely intended to cause offense, and that it shouldn't be a "You are a ______" blanket comment, but when it's in specific relation to a specific comment made in a specific debate...? I'm not sure how any debate can occur without the ability to say "This is utter nonsense and you know it".

That's fair enough if you say "I think you're just playing Dumb -insert forum members name here-" and that's the end of it or they reply saying I'm not or whatever but in the case you're referring to that comment evolved into a discussion about the forum member, that's why the conversation about the forum member was deleted

So many times a forum member will try the "but you already know that" tactic

in the end its just having a poorly disguised go

The whole "I know what you are thinking" thing is just that

a tactic

so the system works fine - post about the topic and not the member

The system works fine for you, perhaps.

Telling someone in a debate that you believe that they already know something and are feigning ignorance, is a perfectly valid debate stance. If someone takes personal offense at that, and can't stay calm and rational at the idea that they're "being told what they think", then their choice is to ignore it, better explain their stance, or leave the debate if they can't keep their temper in check.

The answer isn't disallowing a perfectly normal, bog-standard debate stance that's been in use since Socrates and co were pontificating on steps in Athens and say "Oh no we won't be having any of that here on TiBB! Telling me what I do and don't clearly know how offensive!"

We're all grown-ups not primary school kids.

Yes but that's why we have forum suggestions - to calmly challenge the status quo :hee: If Trump can up-end the US constitution then we can mildly tweak the TiBB rules, by gum.

I was asking why he has such an issue with a man not wearing a suit in the Oval Office but didn’t share the same views for someone who was far more under dressed.
Simple question that he cannot answer.

That sounds an awful lot like censorship you know :suspect:. "It wasn't what you said, it was that you didn't say it nicely, and you weren't wearing a suit!".

Arguing over another country’s leader is pointless
Arguing with people you don’t like
Is even more pointless

ENTPs and perpetual debate. Everything has to be a debate or an argument. Well, look, son, you can’t be right about everything.

I'm talking specifically about the debates section not the whole forum. Everything in a debates forum has to be a debate, yeah :joker:. A debate however is NOT an "argument" in the sense you mean it... which is I suspect where things keep going wrong.

Sometimes that's especially true even if you live there
