View Full Version : US added to human rights watchlist for ‘narrowing’ freedom and now ranks near Serbia

The U.S. was added to a watchlist of countries with “faltering civic freedoms” after a global watchdog group raised alarm bells over recent actions taken by President Donald Trump and his administration.

CIVICUS, a nonprofit organization that serves as an advocate for democracy, added the U.S. to the list on Monday. It’s the first watchlist of the year.

Claiming the U.S. was “once a global champion for democracy and human rights,” CIVICUS said Trump’s attempts to remake the federal government in his vision and remove the U.S. from global participation have raised concerns that it is infringing on democratic freedoms.

The U.S. joins the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Pakistan, Chile, Slovakia and 37 other countries on the list of countries with “narrowed” civic freedoms.
“This is an unparalleled attack on the rule of law in the United States, not seen since the days of McCarthyism in the twentieth century,” Mandeep Tiwana, the interim co-secretary-general of CIVICUS, said in a release.

“Restrictive executive orders, unjustifiable institutional cutbacks, and intimidation tactics through threatening pronouncements by senior officials in the administration are creating an atmosphere to chill democratic dissent, a cherished American ideal,” Tiwana added.

CIVICUS’s “narrowed” category means people in the country can exercise civil freedoms but there are occasional violations of those rights. It is the second-highest rating tier after “open.”

The organization pointed to Trump’s mass firing of federal workers and replacing civil servants with loyalists as actions that could “severely impact constitutional freedoms.”

Trump has carefully selected people who have proven deep loyalty to him to serve in powerful positions – regardless of experience or expertise.

Billionaire Elon Musk, a “special government employee” with no official title, has assisted Trump in drastically reducing the federal workforce as they seek to cut spending by flagging departments, agencies or policies they believe are wasteful, abusive or fraudulent.

As a result, it has essentially stripped the U.S. Agency for International Development of its authority to provide humanitarian aid and assistance, as well as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau of its ability to enforce regulations that protect consumers from fraud or unfair practices.

Through executive orders, Trump has sought to consolidate power in the executive branch, making it easier for him and his allies to monitor and control departments and agencies to ensure they are only carrying out Trump’s agenda.

That includes ceasing all diversity, equity and inclusion policies, cracking down on pro-Palestinian student protests and providing assistance to undocumented immigrants.
“The Trump administration seems hellbent on dismantling the system of checks and balances, which are the pillars of a democratic society,” Tiwana said in the press release.
Monday’s list is not the first time the U.S. has been downgraded on CIVICUS’s watchlist. The country’s status was downgraded to “obstructed” in 2020 after CIVICUS found the Trump administration repressed mass protests.

"a global watchdog"

"CIVICUS, a nonprofit organization that serves as an advocate for democracy"

A globalist NGO funded by The Ford FOundation

As part of this refocus, the Ford Foundation announced in 2016 that it would lead a six-
year effort to raise $100 million for the Movement for Black Lives, an organization designed to receive grants for groups involved in the Black Lives Matter movement.

Headquarters in south africa..

South africa. Although the constitution and law prohibit such practices, there were reports of police and National Defense Force use of torture and physical abuse, some of which resulted in death. The 2021/2022 IPID report cited 99 reported inmate rapes by police officers, 192 reports of torture, as well as reports of assault.

South Africa not on list.

Utter nonsense

No it's not.

Here is one example of an uneven playing field..

Grannies jailed for fb posts that are deemed illegal.. people entering the country illigally( again, against the law) given food, money, clothes, bikes and free accommodation that isnt a prison cell

Civicus is nothing more than a vanity project for diversity, stuff the whites.

Oh give over

What's with the hostility?

You keep doing that with me, and it's for no reason most of the time.

I understand if you don't agree with my opinion, but at least try to be a little bit respectful to my opinion, especially when I am not saying anything about your opinion on this topic.

Which btw do you think that autistic girls being chased down by Police Officers because she said that one of them "looked like a Lesbian" is great democracy at work? Because sliding standards on democracy will lead to poorer Human Rights standards in general.

The US and the UK are both in a bad way with terrible leaders in my view, I honestly don't understand how saying that has warranted your initial response to me, but I'm prepared to be proven wrong.

Hotels aren't really meant to be places where you live at for too long.

It's also not as secure as living in a proper home.

I don't know about being worse than Trump, because Trump is trying to undermine Ukraine against their oppressors which is an evil thing to do imo.

But Starmer is not even looking close to fixing any of our problems that the Tories created during their run, and scarily he temporarily added to it with the whole Police investigating "non-crime" incidents.

It took for severe backlash from the public for him to even start addressing the issue.

Its better than on the streets, and where do you propose to put all these people? there aren't the houses to house them

Well if we're talking about illegal immigrants staying at Hotels, then I think that the Government should be making more haste on their decision between keeping them in the country and finally housing them, or send them back to their own country.

After all some of these Hotels are struggling to stay open anyway, a local one in my area who looked after the homeless and possibly immigrants (I'm not sure on the latter tbh, it's just a guess on my part,) shut down recently.

So they're not reliable places to just plonk immigrants in, in my view.

It is. Obviously it's fine to have criticisms of a government and to believe they've handled things badly. But to try to say that it's on par with the systematic dismantling of the entire government system and replacing every last dissenter with loyalists, appointing billionaires to "untitled" government positions, starting trade wars, and crashing global markets (repeatedly and quite possible on purpose), clear oppression of others in politics, clear oppression of the press, attempts to rewrite the entire US constitution, ripping international alliances to shreds, kowtowing to Russian interests...

Is utter nonsense. The scale simply is not comparable. Comparing Trump's actions to a few chavvy grannies getting suspended sentences for racist social media comments is simple madness. It's not comparing apples and oranges, it's comparing a spud gun to an ICBM.

Fair enough, but I don't think much on your list has anything to do with the usa being downgraded.
