They obviously got a qualified tree surgeon to inspect the tree and submitted a health report
The council will have been consulted and did their own checks

Local Council take cutting down trees very seriously

I know all this because my brother has had to jump through hoops to get his own trees cut

And if you knowing leave a dangerous tree standing and don’t take action you will be liable for someone’s death or damage to property that can see you put in prison or bankrupt

If it was unsafe then they were right to cut it down. Common sense no?

Very sad, but 400 years is a very long time for any tree... I love our oak and if anything happened to it, I would probably be depressed. So I can understand if a tree is a fixture and a core part of someone's life, its loss is felt very much by some.

I'm not an expert, and it's hard to say by the photos, but I can see spots where it looks like it is declining significantly. One would hope steps were taken before that point to be able to try to save it because that doesn't happen overnight.

You clearly don’t know what you are talking about
That tree would of had a a tree preservation order on it meaning it couldn’t be cut with going through the proper process so it was legal to be cut down or even trimmed

On this occasion I actually know what I’m talking about
And if you get permission to cut trees down with preservation orders on them you have to replant the same type of trees in that location

Not sure why the police immediately closed the case, should be an investigation at least to see what steps were followed

That tree was standing when Guy Fawkes was planning the gunpowder plot next door. A lot of people value these connections to history and to nature

Plus it wasn't actually their property and it can be a criminal offense to do this. Think Toby Carvery are the ones who need to get a grip.

Should have let it get a grip on someone’s noggin. Then it would have been, “why didn’t they make it safe”

An ancient oak felled in a north London park on the order of Toby Carvery's owners was healthy and could have lived "for another few hundred years", the leader of the local council has said.

Pub chain Mitchells & Butlers (M&B) said on Tuesday it was responsible for chopping down the 500-year-old tree, "to protect our employees and guests as well as the wider general public".

An Enfield Council planning document from March 2024 stated that the pedunculate oak was a "fine specimen" with high ecological and landscape value and had a life expectancy of at least 50 years.

But council leader Ergin Erbil said a more recent inspection found the tree could have lived for several more centuries.

He said: "Our experts surveyed this tree in December and they said it's healthy... so I completely oppose the argument from the leaseholder that this posed a health and safety risk."

Describing the felling of the tree as an "outrage", Mr Erbil added that M&B "did not consult us as the landowner, and they should have". The oak, which was cut down on 3 April, was located on the edge of council-owned Whitewebbs Park and overlooked a Toby Carvery.

Enfield Council said on Tuesday it had reported the felling as a case of criminal damage to the Met Police, which is understood to have closed its inquiry, deeming it a civil matter.

Did Guy Fawkes plan the attack underneath the tree? If he did, then maybe there would be an argument, otherwise it’s just a tree, a very old tree, but still just a tree

People don’t want police investigating hate crimes because it’s a ‘waste of police resources for hurty words’ but want a full on investigation when a tree gets cut down :joker:

Having an oak tree fall on your head before you get to the door is probably the best thing that could happen to you at a Toby Carvery.
