I think it's more than an ego clash. It's more like a business deal that has gone bad. Both have skeletons in their closet they don't want coming out so I'm not at all surprised Elon grabbed for the most attention-seeking information in his little kit to try to distract from whatever is coming, probably. I suspect many Americans wanted to see this kind of thing play out in full so that all the little skeletons could come to the surface, so to speak. There's so much mental instability that occupies the public office (even at the local level) that at least we're slowly getting a fuller picture of how it operates even if that goes against itself and prevailing the current narratives.

Trump has always kept a stable mess (if that's feasible) on public display but he will drag anyone and anything willing to go there down with him, so it's revealing a lot about how Washington actually functions. The fact people are still willing to even connect with that says a lot about the state of national politics and the people who are willing to work there... maybe politicians at that level are just more honest about the state of things and hoping to profit while the opportunities last :shrug: Lots to consider there...

3) It will of course be used to discredit anything he does say

the thing to remember is that Musk was given access to all the governments databases for everyone in the country and he let his AI loose on it. So, it's very likely that Musk has all sorts of stuff on Trump together with actual evidence. many of the dems are saying that trump sending the guard into california is a distraction too, which I firmly disagree with. What the dems are doing currently, is using the phrase distraction to cover up their own ineptitude at fighting back against trump. All this is typical Trump, he fights his battles on multiple fronts at the same time, then the dems don't know what to prioritise and coordinate a strategy to fight him. All of his actions have a reason. He has brought Musk back down to size and increased his power.
