View Full Version : Are you comfortable?
Crude subject i know, but are you comfortable?
I got in early with crypto, still have decent money invested, but cashed out during the boom. Brought my mum a house. And been investing in franchises ever since. It's addictive, i still work, and pay a mortgage, stay up my mums place while taking rent etc
I own a lake too, Grandad left it to me

No. I just carry around Waitrose bags so-that it looks like I am. I rarely have the money to shop there, but even besides that, I struggle. I get by, and I help people out when I can, but I struggle at the moment.
Barry.

I'm in a working class family.
But thankfully we're not as financially poor as a lot of other working class families.
Like we get by.

Same ( working class , originally off a councillor estate) but we are now comfortable and money isn’t a worry thankfully

That's good to hear Zizu.:wavey:
I still can't believe that in 2025, our dear leaders still don't do anywhere near enough to make sure that everyone has a roof over their head.
Along with free healthcare, it is something that I believe that everyone is entitled to have, yet not everyone does.

Probably the most upsetting thing I see nowhere is all the homeless guys ..
Everyone keeps saying that they have a BMW parked nearby but the ones near us are just terribly dishevelled with half the teeth missing and full of cuts or bruises ( some people think it’s fun to attack them )

Far from it.

No, we're skint, having a kid is more expensive than we ever could have imagined.
I have a nest egg that can be used whenever I need to, generally speaking though, I carry cash, and just use my wages for whatever I need. Which usually isn't much.

Nope, skint and no savings
The definition of well off is dictated by age and by lifestyle, and it can therefore be transitory too. One week a super yacht could seem like a necessity and the next week a bag of lentils will do just fine

So your Granddad left you some land with a lake that is super cool Swan
What are you going to do with it?
I know people complain alot about how much easier older generations had but the upside to that is younger people inherit so much more than back in the day

I get that there are scammers out there that do pretend to be homeless.
But I'm with you personally, I feel sorry for the genuinely homeless people (probably because of my own personal experiences where we were close ourselves at one point,) but people thinking it's great to attack homeless people are probably the ones that deserve to experience homelessness the most, and see how they like it.

This saying is one that has stayed with me
Knowing the price of everything but the value of nothing
Your health and family is worth more than the entire wealth of the world
Cancer doesn’t care if you are a multimillionaire or a tramp

…if I bought that super yacht then a bag of lentils every week for the rest of my life would probably have to be just fine…
We can live like millionaires for the rest of my life … as long as I die tomorrow

Money is far from being everything..
Look at all the millionaire sports/ movie / rock stars who suffer from depression ( or far worse)

No I’m far from it tbh but I do what I can to budget/ save my money where it doesn’t need to be wasted. I’m not a tight arse by any means, I will treat myself when I feel like it and buy gifts for friends/ family for occasions (even if some may be a tad expensive but I know the person receiving will appreciate it).
I have savings and a decent car (both of which I’ve worked my arse off to achieve). Clothes/ shoes wise, Yh I have mainly branded stuff but it’s good quality so I look after it and make sure it lasts me as long as it can. I can’t afford to be splashing out £160 on trainers every few months, I at least try to make them last for a few years so I keep them clean and keep them in the boxes to stay fresh.

You've definitely got your head screwed on right. Your hard work has paid off. Good on you.

I won't be discussing my finances... but I will say this: I grew up in a working class family where my Mum always worked full time and money was tight. I had an idyllic childhood and our little house was full of love. We were rich in other ways.

I think you are rich if you can afford a roof over your head, fuel and food, and if you are healthy

Got a decent chunk in saving which we’ve ramped up a bit for our move to Australia. We’re both fortunate to have good jobs. We’re very comfortable.

For now, just allow the sheep graze it over the winter months, then allow the grass to grow for hay and silage. The small lake/big pond appeals to me much more atm.

…fishing lake…?…
…fishing lake…?…
I've shown it once, right? I can't remember, may have posted it on here years ago. You can't really call it a lake, but it kinda is, just tiny haha.
It does have some lovely fish in it, but it's not a commercial fishery and never will be.

…we can call it a lil lake……and I don’t know if the land will be something that you’ll be able to build on at any time but if its a great/peaceful space, it’s a pretty nice thing to ponder over, eh…

It's gorgeous, in the middle of nowhere, will get some better pics one day. You could camp down there and feel like you're in the middle of the Forrest
The fields, none of them, will get planning in my lifetime i don't think. Very remote.

There are so, sooooooo many Deer down there, but i wont ever allow hunting, the guy down the lane doesn't allow it either. I dunno, money can be made out of it, but i just love the memories. I learned to drive a tractor when i was 8 on those fields

When my Grandad inherited the whole farm and land, the lake was massively overgrown, like a puddle really, no fish, just a hole in the ground with water. Took us a winter, but we cut all the over grown branches down, sorted it all out, got on a small boat (capsized once, middle of winter, fully clothed, freezing, my grand couldn't speak through the cold shock, i went the other way, adrenaline pumping, stripping bollock naked (as wet clothes in cold will kill you) and running all through the woods the WRONG way to the truck  ) and just sorted it all out. Then added fish, Carp, Tench, Perch etc.
Fun memories, honestly

…what a great thing to have been able to work on together and really feel that you’d achieved something special …(…as well as cold shock ……)…but just also enjoying that time together that would have meant so much to him as well…I can see why it’s such a special place for you and has such an emotional attachment……
