[The future of the Notting Hill Carnival
could be in doubt without "urgent funding"
from the government,
its organisers said in
a letter leaked to the BBC.

Carnival chair Ian Comfort has
written to Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy
to request the funding,
which he said was "essential to safeguarding
the future and public safety
of this iconic event".

It follows a review of the festival,
which attracts about two million people
over the August Bank Holiday weekend,
that identified "critical public
safety concerns" that needed
additional funding
to address, the letter said.
The Met Police's Assistant Commissioner
Matt Twist previously raised
concerns of a
"mass casualty event" due to crowd
density.]

On Good Safety Grounds
Cancel the Bugger, I say.

The Government don't like to fund stuff.

They're like Bin men and Hollywood writers, they hate to do their job.

it's not the job of the government to fund drug addled stabbing frenzies

Why not cancel it and fund something for families? Something where people don't take drugs, stab each other, sh1t and/or shag in other people's front gardens. And honestly, the next time I see an on-duty copper dancing at a festival I'm going to hurt myself....

Block off the streets, make it an all ticket affair and it would probably fund itself.

There aren't that many of us here. And it's a discussion forum.

Not really sure what your point is, apart from taking the opportunity to have a bit of a passive aggressive dig.

I know, right... Don't be racist!

Jeez, you are absolutely obsessed with race. I didn't mention it, why are you pretending I am calling you racist?

If you don't like Notting Hill carnival, don't go.

Calling for it to be cancelled because you don't like it is ridiculous considering you're in other threads saying that being offended and disagreeing with others' opinion is all part of life.

The Notting Hill Carnival deserves to die

This late summer event is now an annual hotbed of violence, debauchery and disruption

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GtyzzrMXgAApkD4?format=jpg&name=small

At the end of last summer’s Notting Hill Carnival, Metropolitan Police revealed
that eight people were stabbed during the “celebrations” and a total of 334
arrests were made – most for possession of an offensive weapon and drug-
related offences.

One of those stabbed was 32-year-old mother Cher Maximen, who later died
after being attacked with a zombie knife by 20-year-old Shakeil Thibou in
front of her three-year-old daughter on the Carnival’s so-called “Family Day”.

Those who wish to protect it in its current form and trivialise the levels of
violence at the event are signing its death warrant. If they want it to survive,
they must accept that it needs to completely change course.

Don't go if you don't like it! I'm sure that's a great comfort to people living in Notting Hill.

The carnival is violent, dangerous and drug-fuelled. That's not an opinion, it's a fact. If it was a predominantly white festival and as violent and dangerous, I'd be just as against it.

I didn’t say you wouldn’t be. Nobody accused you at hating it because it was a predominantly black festival.

It’s giving doth protest too much, NGL.

The carnival hasn't been a safe place to be for the last 30 years, i'm really not surprised that it's now seen as past its sell by date. We have enough problems in the world without creating new ones in the name of "fun"

The London Mayor has No Spare Money

They need an extra £2million to ensure safety

So it is now down to the Government to fund that?

Tbf, not having enough fun in society is partially helping create these lunatics.

Because they mentally start breaking down, and lose perspective on reality.

Mystic Mock

Just to add, not only does having fun events improve people's mental stability.

But it can be an opening to make new friends, which is something that a lot of these people desperately need.

Some Local Councils
have put up the funding they needed

[The policing bill alone, exceeding £6 million, which falls upon
the taxpayers of London,
Can the Mayor assure the people of this city
that the suspension of this event is an option
available to him?]

I will never understand how a 2 day event costs so much to police

7,000 police in attendance.for 2 days...the maths are not adding up

big events cost a lot to police. Most are on double time at special events. That's why they smile and dance along with the crowd
