Former Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

The offences are reported to have taken place between 2021-2022, the Metropolitan Police said.

The charges involve three women with two counts of rape relating to one woman, three counts of rape in connection to a second woman and one count of sexual assault linked to a third woman.

Mr Partey's contract with Arsenal ended on Monday after playing with team since 2020. BBC News has contacted the team for comment.

Det Supt Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation, said: "Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward.

"We would ask anyone who has been impacted by this case, or anyone who has information, to speak with our team. You can contact detectives about this investigation by emailing CIT@met.police.uk"

Mr Partey is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 5 August.

Whoa.. so all the rumours were true. And the charges involve THREE women.
Partey is innocent until proven guilty, but Arsenal will now face some very
difficult questions about the decision to let him continue to play for 3 years, on
full pay. What did the police tell the club?

Buy him a Lamborghini and send him on holiday with it.

Yep, been a pretty open secret among Arsenal fans and I'm appalled we held onto him for so long. A complete stain on the club.

the london clubs seem to let players away with anything whereas the manchester clubs take action

Didn’t ManU used to turn their heads when FakeRonaldo , Nani and Anderson were regularly partying with women of the night when the three were sharing accommodation ?

Bit different to rape? I assume the ladies were consenting, please don't defend this guy I dont think you defended Benjamin Mendy though he was found not guilty in the end

…if this has been an open secret and those five allegations/reported incidents are dating to 2021/2022, I just can’t understand why it’s taken so long for the charges to have been made…it really does feel as though women have no value at all…

I was replying to the suggestion that northern clubs were tougher on crimes or bad behaviour

it's factually accurate. Plenty footballers attend parties with young beautiful woman, not so many are accused of rape with evidence to back it up. London clubs historically ignore such cases, manchester clubs do not. This is factually correct

If you say so ..

I still think Fergie was hypocritical .. ruling hard like controlling what type of cars the players were allowed to have yet turning a blind eye to those three regularly hiring groups of prostitutes

i think you should stop colouring your opinions of players and managers by the teams you like and dont like

That Mendy case was a great injustice imo, I personally believe that he was guilty.

It's bureaucracy with cases like rape and murder.

Especially if it's a Celebrity being suspected.

Most people in the football world knew he was guilty but Arsenal kept playing him to improve their title chances and still won nothing. Now they release him a few days before he's finally charged.. Arsenal have basically lost the right to the moral highground now over anything which will be tough for Arteta given how much he likes to moan
