[A sign saying 'Stop the boats' was also attached
to the pyre in Moygashel,
on the outskirts of Dungannon
in Co Tyrone in Northern Ireland]
[The Moygashel bonfire is part
of the wider Eleventh Night celebrations
in Northern Ireland, which take place on
the night of July 11 each year.
These bonfires are rooted in Protestant
unionist and loyalist tradition and serve
as a lead-up to The Twelfth on July 12,
a public holiday marking the
key historical Battle of the Boyne.
This happened when Protestant King William
of Orange defeated Catholic King James II,
securing a Protestant line of succession
to the British Crown.
An Irish tricolour flag was also placed on the
bonfire, which is among about
300 which be burned across Thursday and Friday
night in the region.
Sinn Fein's Assembly member for
Fermanagh and South Tyrone,
Colm Gildernew, has been among those
responding,
branding the display 'vile' and 'deplorable'.]

It made the news and got people talking about the fact people want an end to the boats. They weren't people in that boat, the were mannequins, I'm not sure some people understand that....

I remember a bonfire night when I was a teenager we burned an effigy of David Campese when the England rugby team got particularly badly mullahed by Australia... There's a long history of effigy burning.

I admire the attention to detail, they're not just generic figures, they're all dressed and each is individualised!
There are too many women on it to be realistic, though.

Yes it us a little male heavy isn't it, when their women must still be suffering in the war -torn countries from which they are supposedly escaping.

Interesting, I swear I hear time and time again people were okay with refugees, and it was the economic migrants that was the problem.

Burning effigies of migrants in life jackets? That’s not art — it’s racist porn for people who get off on cruelty.

I think if a chant of "DEATH, DEATH TO THE IDF" is art, so is this. I think if chanting "UP HAMAS, UP HEZBOLLAH" is art, so is this.

whatever floats your boat

Same...
Now, footage from two previous gigs is being assessed by counter-terrorism police in the UK.
In one, the band allegedly call for the death of Conservative MPs. Another seems to show a band member shouting "up Hamas, up Hezbollah". Both groups are banned in the UK and it is a crime to express support for them.
Kneecap have responded with a statement, saying they "do not, and have never, supported Hamas or Hezbollah".
They claimed that footage where they appeared to say "the only good Tory is a dead Tory" had been "taken out of all context", and apologised for the hurt caused to the families of murdered MPs Jo Cox and Sir David Amess.
But Cox's widower Brendan was unimpressed, calling their statement "only half an apology". Downing Street agreed, describing their words as "half-hearted" and "completely unacceptable".
The row was discussed in the House of Commons on Tuesday, with Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp calling their comments "evil".
Sinn Fein's Assembly member for
Fermanagh and South Tyrone,
Colm Gildernew, has been among those
responding,
branding the display 'vile' and 'deplorable'.
The same man who praises kneecap, and heaps praise on the IRA man who tried to murder the Irish first minister.

No, from war torn countries.
If you're against people seeking refuge in the UK, then that's your opinion.
I understand the issue surrounding economic migrants and while I think the topic is over-discussed (considering those coming over on boats make up a small percentage of our migrants each year) and is spoken about divisively, that doesn't mean I don't think there needs to be something done to stop/limit, it for the benefit and safety of everyone, including those who aren't seeking refuge who are making crossings.
However, in terms of Refugees? I just am surprised to see it so brazenly marked on a symbol inciting hate. Usually those who are against immigrants insist it's *just* the economic migrants they are against, not those seeking refuge.
I wonder how the Ukrainian refugees feel about such messaging. And the many thousand from HK who have come to the UK to escape the political unease in their homeland.
Also, would love to know how much the people who erected this actually care about Veterans. It's kind of giving... performative.

This is not a one off, bonfires are lit every 11th July as part of the Marching Season by protestants in the North, I imagine they care alot about veterans given the British Army did many tours there in the 70s and 80s

I know... Then people compare them to Ukrainians because they're white and they want to imply we're racist... But Ukrainians actually fled a war torn country.
…I’m reading that this is being investigated by the authorities in terms of a possible hate incident so that’s progressing atm…it feels deliberately provocative and inciteful to choose those effigies when only recently, migrant homes were attacked nearby in that same area…

Yes BBXX
And also general illegal migrants
Looking for a better life in soft UK
It is never one nation
In a packed small boat
I used Ukraine because they are refugees and the bonfire states refugees. :)
The boats are full of tattooed idiots, or non practicing Muslims as I prefer to call them.Basically the UK, is the dumping ground for countries expelling thier non practicing Muslims. Like people with tatoos. They come here because they believe in our way of life. Even the ones fleeing persecution for not following islam are bad mouthing the criminal element amongst them in the hotels up and down the country. In fighting will come before any attacks by British citizens.

That's good to read it's being investigated.
Sadly we live in a time where migrants are now made more the scapegoats of what's wrong in this Country.
That's what seems to amuse some anti migrant individuals unfortunately.
Personally, even as a child, I never even saw the point of symbols of Guy Fawkes being put on a fire.
I thought it pointless and a celebration of barbarism as I got older.
Never liked it or enjoyed it.
I'd never support something like this, nor would want to actually.
Not with the nutcases there are in the World today, who if something like this lights a spark of an idea of their own prejudice, they may act on it.
Pointless divisive madness and thinking, from only more likely sick and prejudiced minds in my view.

Excellent post.
Burning effigies of anyone just seems needlessly divisive and extreme symbolism really.
The people in power - the rich - have convinced a whole bunch of people that Migrants are the root of their problems. It’s the fault of migrants they can’t get jobs, it’s the fault of migrants the country is broke, it’s the fault of migrants that crime is increasing.
Migrants are used as a distraction to point the finger of blame in another direction to the general public don’t blame the government for setting up a system that has broken and one that only ever favours the richest in society.
Unfortunately, many people have fallen for it.

I remember David Cameron made people on benefits his scapegoats, and May and Boris both went for the EU/Brexit stuff.

Due to social media, everyone has figured out that you get maximum reader engagement by making them angry, so now all stories these days are designed to make the reader angry and it gets automatically fed to them in their news feeds. There is no balance anymore, people are fed stuff constantly and are being controlled and basically told what to be angry about.
That's why politics has gone to ****, thats why everything has gone to ****.

I am all for protests but personally I don't like burning flags/effigies/symbols, particularly when aimed at those most vulnerable in society. I just hate the imagery and extreme hatred it exudes.

There is nothing vulnerable about economic illegal migrants in the UK brought here by criminal gangs to milk our taxes and leftists tendency for suicidal empathy.
I fear you have missed the symbolism, nor understood why the bonfires are lit
