Yeah, shocking, I remember thinking it was some sort of joke first as I was listening to the news on the radio and when they announce the 2nd plane and the 2nd tower i just didn't believe it

I think many of the problems of today can be traced back directly to 9/11, not only how it happened but how it was covered after.

Not helped by the fact that the newer generations didn't live in a pre-9/11 world. So they really don't fully comprehend what was lost and why some people are really attached to their worldview. Because some of us did live in a world where unity was very much possible before politics got too deeply involved in our lives.

Adding to this, the hyper-centralization of the Internet towards a handful of platforms. Most internet searches are through platforms, not search engines now. That changed a lot about how information was exchanged. Blogs used to be a very big thing. So I think that actually ruined quite a few movements that weren't tainted by a polarized culture.

The internet was very pro-free speech and we saw so much independent journalism, not just in the West, but in other places that really did start to open the door for positive outcomes for either better policy or higher transparency. I'm honestly leaning on that being intentional to keep the people from having too much influence over the system, because since then the transparency has really left... of course any authority would prefer a media to be as centralized as they can more easily connect their narrative through "certifiable" sources. It's so much easier to manage.

I remember vividly all the political journalism that came up overnight after 9/11 and the advocacy for changes such as universal healthcare that didn't have to do with which party was in power, but rather holding politicians accountable. So much journalism and political thought was grass roots and was lost from that era. We wouldn't have had Obama without those grass movements, I don't think. So I kind of understand now why a lot of people blame his Presidency for quite a bit of the decline because he helped facilitate a culture of "cracking down". But I really do think much of the issues really stem from 9/11 and what it did to us psychologically and forever changed our internal worldview... between dealing with "new media" and having to adjust to that and then also being emotionally vulnerable to newer threats, it was a lot to go up through for a lot of people (especially politically).

Watched this at senior school. Looking back it probably wasn't the best idea to drag everyone out of class to watch the news!
