‘The Inbetweeners’ Set for a Comeback as Creators Strike Deal With Banijay U.K.

By Alex Ritman – Variety

“The Inbetweeners,” the hit British teen comedy series that gave the world a foul-mouthed library of hilariously awkward quotes — not to mention two hugely successful spin-off movies — looks set to return.

Banijay U.K. and Fudge Park Productions, the company founded in 2015 by creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley, have struck an agreement which they say “paves the way for the return of the hit comedy title.”

Exactly how the show will return — and on what platform — remains unknown, although Morris and Beesley have hinted it would once again revolve around the original characters.

“Incredibly exciting to be plotting more adventures for our four favourite friends (ooh friends),” they said in a statement.

Originally broadcast on E4 between 2008 and 2010, “The Inbetweeners” followed the misadventures of suburban teenager Will MacKenzie and his friends Simon Cooper, Neil Sutherland, and Jay Cartwright at the fictional Rudge Park Comprehensive. The series portrayed school life, friendship, male bonding, lad culture, and a string of failed romantic encounters — a deliberately awkward, realistic counterpoint to the stylised teen drama “Skins.”

Over three series, “The Inbetweeners” set ratings records for E4 and won multiple awards. Two hit movies followed in 2011 and 2014, with the first breaking the record for the biggest opening weekend for a U.K. comedy film at the time.

The original series was made by Bwark Productions, founded by Morris and Beesley, later sold to Zodiak Media (acquired by Banijay in 2016). The new deal reportedly unlocks “the rights and the potential to bring ‘The Inbetweeners’ back for new audiences across a range of platforms including film, TV and stage.”

“We are thrilled to announce this exciting partnership with Banijay, who share our vision and ambition for one of the most iconic comedies in British history,” said Jonathan Blyth, managing director of Fudge Park. “This is a wonderful moment for fans — there are exciting conversations afoot and more news to follow.”

Patrick Holland, CEO of Banijay U.K., added:

“I have worked with Damon and Iain on a number of Fudge Park projects and was delighted to pick up the conversation about the future of ‘The Inbetweeners.’ They have an infectious creative vision for the brand which will resonate with audiences old and new — I can’t wait to get going.”

Banijay Rights will handle distribution of “The Inbetweeners.”

Since the series ended, Morris and Beesley have worked on several other projects. Together, they made the comedy film “The Festival” and BBC series “The First Team.” Beesley also created “White Gold,” starring many of “The Inbetweeners” cast, while Morris co-wrote “Next Goal Wins” with Taika Waititi, helped create Apple’s “Time Bandits” series, and recently directed the Netflix feature “My Oxford Year.”

I spose it would be interesting to see what they're up to now.

Jay = a best-selling author of erotic fiction.
Simon = using his Sociology degree for a McJob.
Will = he's back in the garage, still thinking he's better than everyone else.
Neil = the editor in chief of the local newspaper.
