A woman died after being trampled by a herd of cows while walking her dog on Exmoor, an inquest was told.

Rebecca Jane Hitchings, 59, of Woodcombe, near Minehead, in Somerset, was found with severe injuries and she was airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, but doctors were unable to save her.

Senior Devon, Plymouth and Torbay coroner Philip Spinney said Ms Hitchings suffered blunt trauma that led to haemorrhagic shock. Ms Hitchings, a retired nurse who was born in Exeter, died on 16 October.

The inquest, held in Devon, was adjourned and is expected to be transferred to the Somerset coroner for a full hearing.

Awful. Poor woman.

I live pretty rurally and still won’t walk through fields when out and about with the dogs that have cows or even horses in. Always been weary of them just incase they decide to turn, enormously powerful animals.

…such a tragic thing/…very, very sad…although it’s a very rare thing to hear any similar stories to this, it feels as though that person is often on a walk with their dog …so somehow the cows feeling spooked and threatened by the dog, maybe…?…I don’t know, I’m just in thought about it really …I wonder if there were young cows that were being protected because there was a threat thought to be there….very, very sad…
