View Full Version : Is the problem this year mainly the types of housemates chosen?

Bad production choices aside with twists etc, do you feel the housemates as a group just don’t work as they’re too placid, no real friction and don’t seem to care about most things (apart from trying to look good with their views to the public)?

No thoughts?

I've really enjoyed it so don't have an issue.
I think they need to start discriminating a lil bit and put more of an emphasis on non-college educated people, and also older people. Obviously that won't completely cancel out the likelihood of HMs continuing to self-censor, mediate amongst themselves the second a disagreement opens up, and engage in the nauseating 'therapy speak' that we've seen over the last few ITV series, but it does more to mitigate that and open up the potential for more drama, conflict, and HMs simply being themselves and not demonstrating this pathological fear of causing offence through their own freedom of expression. That's my opinion.

Sadly this year everything seems focused on sexuality/gender orientation imo...too much PC and people can no longer be themselves in fear of offending people.
I guess its the world we live in.
i've just said in another thread, these hm's aren't interested in the bb concept, which i would have thought was a mandatory prerequisite to appear on the show

From memory I think the applications where open for absolutely months on end
Did they struggle to get good people applying?
I think bb is done for in all honesty they are looking for media savvy housemates who all ready have a following
You could go on to a tube in London in rush hour and get and get a great line up of random people of all ages and backgrounds going about their daily lives

- Housemate selection
- No 24/7 Live Feed
- BB being too restrictive on what Housemates are allowed to say without getting either a warning or ejected. Imo the biggest issue with current BB.
- The way the highlights are edited this series has ranged in quality to put it politely.
- Poor tasks.
Don't get me wrong, there's still the odd little moment where the old BB magic rears it's head, but it's extremely rare unfortunately.
I'm still optimistic that ITV will get the balance right for the next Civilian series, but they need to not do what Channel 5's era did which was to double down on their mistakes.
The ratings are showing that BB fans don't want the Paw Patrol version of Big Brother, whether ITV or Endemol can accept that will determine Big Brother's future.

Yeah this, they also choose housemates to try to represent "equality" rather than who would actually be a better housemate

Very true, you normally get a few who are huge fans of the show but I'm not sure anyone in there this year is. Maybe Emily and Cameron

Gani was, but we lost him in week 1.
..yeah, maybe the housemate type is a contributive factor…it’s interesting what Teja said about the cash prize and being there for that…?…because although all housemates would absolutely want to win it, I think that many are also looking to self promote in terms of exposure and careers etc…and so many do have a very high social media profile and following…and I think that’s possibly ‘killed or killing’ the more quirky and unique housemates of olden days…when they were all more about personality and character and individuality, you know…?…strangely though, although I haven’t engaged so much this season…the closest we’ve had I think, to the early days type of housemate has been from this season/Richard…he has all of the quirks to his personality that we so love from BB…I don’t know, I think for me there is just lots of factors that have meant that I haven’t engaged in the same way as last season or the previous…

That's true, Gani felt like a very old school housemate
I guess they're all a bit young now. Most of this lot would have been between 3 and 12 years old when BB finished on Channel 4
…I think that it’s also too ‘formula’ in its format, which is the way that reality TV has gone since the early days…

We’re never gonna get casts as good as the Channel 4 era and i don’t really know why.. maybe everyone’s too sensitive and careful these days.. but to your point i actually think most of this cast has been decent apart from maybe the evicted Cameron, Nancy and Zelah

...........i feel ITV have been 'too cautious' choosing HM's that will not cause major issues...............
well? apart from george...................even farida has become wallpaper.................
Mark L
…actually, I was thinking also that for me, maybe it isn’t so much the housemates…or the only factor…it’s also in giving a two week immunity and then followed by a save and replace…it takes away that possibility/anticipation etc of any housemates being up for eviction every week…it’s just makes it all so much more ‘limiting’ in terms of excitement and one of the fundamentals of BB/for me…
