View Full Version : Why does Zelah call Sam, Them?

In the sneak peak, talking about Sam Nancy and Caroline he says. Them, Nancy and Caroline.
Sam said he's not into all that nonsense on the first HL show.

Sam also said he doesn't mind what pronouns people use - "you can't say the wrong thing with good intentions", or something like that.
In Zelah's case, I think it's just overly performative.

What about, the wrong thing with bad intentions
Sam was called she, and he on L&L last night, AJ had to correct the people calling Sam he or she with "they". So i dunno, maybe Sam has said something in the DR we haven't seen. But seems a lot of others are confused too.
…I just re-watched the vid and I think/my understanding is that Zelah says that he’s finding it hard to trust Sam atm, ‘that little trio’…but he hadn’t said who the trio were so adds Nancy and Caroline as the other two because he’s already named Sam….’them’ just means the ‘little trio’, is my understanding…

Maybe the whole episode will clear it up.
He was really funny though, Sam that is. Not Zelah.

I thought that too, that's how i took it anyway, But who knows, it's difficult to comprehend when referring to a single person as "them". It just seems like a very alien concept, maybe in a few years and using the "they/them" pronouns will become less confusing

I remember that too yeah but I'm sure there was mention of the "they/them" pronouns very early on in the series too because I picked up on it and preferred to use it.
Marcus referred to Sam as "they" too. I guess it's just a personal choice since Sam has said any pronoun is fine
when i was a lad calling people they/them was considered very impolite

Yeah, Sam said this in the Secret Room!
But also, it's really not difficult to just be nice to somebody. If you go out of your way to disrespect somebody then it's very telling of the person you are

Not caring about pronouns is the new 'Bi' of the gay world.
I remember a time when bi people were looked down on by 'real' gays.
If you don't choose a hardline pronoun and then insist others obey it you are not 'real' and are just a 'people pleaser'... It's really extreme gatekeeping and pretty vile.
This conversation should have been called out more by self professed liberals at the time.

A lot of the gay community are actually against all the modern version of it all.
I have several LGB friends that aggressively hate all the modern US imported woke crap and just want to get back to how it was in the 90s gay culture wise.

Personally I don’t care for the labels etc (I try not to live my life defined by them). But it doesn’t bother me if somebody wants to use them, it literally doesn’t affect me whatsoever and I’m happy to use that label for them.

I don't think the lefties need to face consequences just because they hold a controversial/minority view.
Imo any Government that tried to enforce that would become the villain.

I think, and not speaking for anyone else here, that some people are just biological realists and to insist that they must conform their language to betray that is, to them, offensive.
It's like, for them, being made to say the sky is red, when you an see it's blue. It's a betrayal of what they know to be true and being made to parrot falsehoods is unacceptable.
Why is it ok to offend one and group in the protection of not offending another?
If someone believes a biological man is a man and should be called 'he' then that's as valid as insisting otherwise. No one's rights trump the others in this.
Does that make sense?

Oh it makes sense, I just don’t get why people get so irked by it all to the point they go out of their way to then be offensive.
Examples on this forum with Zelah when people purposely overuse the word ‘she’ several times in every sentence they write about him to be offensive. If you don’t want to write ‘he’, just use Zelah’s name instead.
That wasn’t aimed at On The Right btw, I can’t say I’ve personally noticed him do that.

I think they are just speaking in their true voice, not in an effort to be offense.
Others finding you offensive doesn't mean necessarily that you were trying to be. Speaking your won truth can indeed just be offensive to others, but that's on them not you.
In the end, no one can offend you, you can only choose to be offended, so I do think people need to control themselves on this all of this rather than reporting others for 'offensive' speech.
But, I do respect the forum rules on it whatever, which is why I use 'they' as a compromise. I don't mind really :)

Oh some on here went out of their way to emphasis it several times in their posts (hence why James put out that reminder).
The pronouns thing doesn’t phase me, what does phase me is the use of homophobic slurs when describing certain housemates (mainly Sam and Zelah). Seems to be quite prominent this season compared to others.

Sadly so. I have seen it forever (I was raised in a gay family in the 80s and have had LGB family/ extended family all of my life).
I love a lot about gay culture.. Not sure who knows the Royal Oak in London in the 80s, but that's the crowd I grew up with.. but it can be really ****in nasty :joker:

Both parties are incredibly authoritarian and evil imo, but I think it would be disrespectful to call either party right or left.
Because my understanding of true right and left leaning Politics, is that both sides are well intentioned, something that Labour and the Tories haven't been in a long time.
And I suppose time will tell with Reform.
