I really dislike the Argos ads. They’re up there with the annoying meercat ones.

The Coca Cola ads are the ones that always make me feel Christmassy since I was kid (Toys R Us was the other, although they’re now back from extinction I can’t recall seeing any Christmas ads from them anymore).

Hated last years, hate this one even more. Why are they making them really depressing. What happened to the cute animals or the animations? Guessing they can't afford to do them anymore. But last year on first watch i thought someone had died on it, the part where she asks her sister to join her or something like that and the sister says she can't.
This time I was certain the son had died or the dad had. This was incredibly bleak and dark. Bit a nice Christmas advert at all I dont really get it. So the song takes him back to a time when he was happy and raving and then he had kids? Is that the message??

Yeah same the coca cola one was always the one that would truly start the Christmas period. But I swear for at least four years they kept using the same one so it stopped being special and it was always one of the last company's to air its Christmas advert, like a few days before, but I love this years its the best Christmas advert so far from what ive seen

Something about not the teen not being able to communicate with his Dad...guff
Its terrible and as a marketing tool is terrible, remember when you could buy a soft toy to go along with the advert, they used to sell out as well, cant see sales being particularly brisk after watching this, do they even sell Vinyl

…I think for me…(…the message…)…was that the nostalgia of the song also took the dad back to his son being born and the intense love that a parent has for their child…and maybe now going through a more difficult relationship time that many parents do with their children when their children are pushing into adulthood and independence etc…?…and not always showing that love so openly anymore but that moment did and that the son had put so much thought into the gift…for me, it’s not about a life of not having kids/it’s about the love that a child brings to a life…
…probably overthink things but, yeah I didn’t mind it…not the best/not the worst but quite touching…

I was literally just thinking that, do they sell music? Also there used to be great tracks that went along with the adverts that would make it into the charts, remember the Lily Allen one? This track isnt going to get into the charts despite it being a pretty great dance track but the part where it goes acoustic sounds awful

Also im surprised the lidl advert got to use wouldn't it be nice as their backing track as thats become connected with the sky mobile adverts. So i wonder what they think about it

Actually although i do stick by the fact John Lewis adverts used to be a lot better...having ammis explanation of it and then I watched it again its not as bad as I thought. But it still feels pretty depressing. Maybe its a grower?

Also is anyone with me on the fact that it feels odd to be seeing Christmas adverts on tv. How is it November?? This year flew by. It honestly feels like September still. How is im a celebrity on next sunday? Oh actually I will post their advert cos its pretty good
But yeah it feels too early. I think they should start from mid November rather than the start

Just watched the John Lewis ad. They really do think they're amazing. Predictable and over-schmaltzy for me. Never heard the track before and it wouldn't bother me if I never heard it again.

I’m sure it’s a bad remix of a 90s dance track.

Its the classic 90s dance track by Alison Limerick. Any late 80s and early 90s raver sees it as a stone cold classic
The Dad has to give up his raving lifestyle when the son comes along
Advert has gone down a storm so far

Agree with LT though, it was a huge tune back in the day

I though Marks and Spencer had got rid of smug anti-Semite Dawn French? She's back again for Christmas. I'd boycott M&S if I wasn't already boycotting them for having a man in a dress attempt to fit a bra on a 14 year old.
Argos ad is pissing me off, literally no one thinks Argos "just sell toys" we've all had a sh!tty flatpack from there once or twice in our lives.

…also, didn’t Argos/Saisbury’s take in Habitat Brand which is home/garden accessories and furniture items etc…they do lots of stuff that isn’t toys…

Yeah i think so. I remember the Argos catalogue as a kid, you had to go through what felt like MILLIONS of pages before you got to the toys at the back.

…as children we would go through catalogues and we would choose one thing from each page that Santa would bring…I mean, it wasn’t just toys, we would go through many categories and choose…every year we would do that really excitedly …and coveting all the shiny stuff…and then get our tangerine and nuts in the Christmas stocking but that was exciting as well…..

Oh those were the days
I remember going through the Littlewood's catalogue, it was amazing, you'd see all these cool things that were practically FREE, all you had to do was pay 60p a week (for 6000 years). That's how i got my PS2, and 2 games. However, they sent the games then said the Consoles were in high demand and they're waiting for another batch before they could send mine. I had to wait like 2 months for the console. I read the back covers and manuals of those games about 50 times over waiting for the console

YES, i remember that, oh man, i remember this catalogue collector bloke would come round to my aunts, and they'd be seeing what they could get together to give him (it usually pence too  ). Doesn't seem that long ago, but it was practically a lifetime ago

…I wonder, do some people not take them down at all but just switch them off through the year until now…
John Lewis ad doesn't do much for me but I think it would resonate a lot with fathers of teenagers - they're getting old, kind of miss their partying days, would love to go back to it and don't always find it easy to connect to their teenage kids but they also realise that raising a child is the best thing they've ever done
Give me the bear and the hare any day though
