View Full Version : Karma - almost (two months on) What are your feelings today?

When Karma was first introduced on 29/5/07, it became a massive thing and most members were talking about the positives and the negatives of having it.

(+ Karma is lovely:thumbs:)

(- Karma is NOT )

1) But, how have you found it, now you are all used to it?

2) Do you have it switched (Off) like I chose to do & just don't have a need for it?

3) Or, do you really love it and it really works for you?

4) Any stories that you would like to tell about it?

I don't use it since the beginning, I knew it was a bad idea and it still a bad idea. It's a stupid idea to rate the members, I hope some didn't take it in a bad way and don't feel incomfortable about that. It's just a popular contest, TIBB disapointed me a little bit by this, I thought it was more intelligent than that stupid karma.
But I still love TIBB for sure ! :spin:

After that speech, it's time to give me some karma guys !!! :joker::pat:

I turned mine off a while back because I felt it was a pointless system in the end, whilst the majority were sensible with it there were others who'd just take points off, for little or no reason.

Only 1 member (sorry 2 now) has got it turned on in this thread. It doesn't mean anything. Can someone tell me the point of it?

I bet you wished you could know what the admin's know about who took them off you Dan_?

That sort of information could cause all kind of problems with members. :spin2::spin2:

But I am sure that many are happy. It is done on other forums and it has worked, so why not this one?

I'm not overly bothered to be honest, not much to achieve from knowing who it was.Quite possibly someone totally irrelevant to me.

I'd say maybe opinions are more diverse on here and rather than challenge the post with a well thought out reply to disagree, the easier option for some is to just sneakily take a karma point off.

I can certainly agree with the last part of your post.

I guess it is easier to do that, and some do assume that when Karma points dissappear all of a sudden, they can think it was taken off by a particular member or members within a particular thread and that may lead to hostilities or arguments from those who may take the whole Karma thing too seriously.

I've kept mine on but I don't really care about how many Karma points I've got. People taking them off has helped in this way as I'm not feeling competitive against members (even my friends) who have a lot of Karma points as I have a tendency to get jealous easily. I've got more than what I expected to have anyway.

You can turn it off? *blink* Didn't know that xD

I think I'll turn it off, I'm hardly gaining anything by having it up, and I mean, it's nice that people want to + you, but nobody likes being minus'd, so it's.. meh. If you have karma, you shouldn't have the option to turn it off because a lot of people will always disagree with it, and you might as well not have it at all if lots of people don't have it turned on.

I say... Karma bores me! It bores me listening to people moan about it and it bores me having 50 million threads on Karma. I don't know why things that happened a while ago, like this big Karma debate, can't just stay in the past.... talking about it once a week or month does not make it any better. Just turn it off if you don't like it?

Nicola what a grea post you made, I admire your honesty and felt the need to give you Karma for such a great post!

Unlike the Stroppy one I rarely use Karma and when I do I fight against the darkside with it, I only use mine for +karma these days as it makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

I know that Karma can be taken away, even when you have been gone for ages and then suddenly pop back on to the forum and find it suddenly reduced.

But, that doesn't matter if it doesn't bother you either way.

I am sure you'll be back very soon Emilee:thumbs: It's addictive:thumbs2:

What a waste of my time that was.

True, I've given it to someone who can't accept others opinions a few times, mainly because if someone doesn't agree with them, they'll take it as an offence and make it personal - which doesn't deserve + at all.

It would just provoke more negative karma being given to you and would be an abuse of the system.

When karma was introduce it was stated that anyone found abusing the system... i.e only giving out negative karma would have the rights to use the karma system taken away.

Minus 2 isn't that low I have seen people with much lower karma scores. It only takes a couple of points and you will be to zero.

If you don't like the system you can always turn it off. Then nobody can give you or take away karma. It just doesn't appear.

Out of a Moderation team of nine, four of us have have it turned off. We all have our own reasons. My reason that I felt at the time it would be easy to target moderators with negative karma after giving a warning to a popular member.

Why do all the admins have it turn off, they should be promoting it.

All the Admin team have it turned on.

Out of a Moderation team of nine, four of us have have it turned off. We all have our own reasons. My reason that I felt at the time it would be easy to target moderators with negative karma after giving a warning to a popular member.

Well im turning mine off then.

I agree it is open to abuse but what system is not, the great thing is it was reviewed and made into an optional add on for those that want it and who know and accept that people will give and people will take away.

I do however think there should be some research done sometimes into people with so much negative karma. I sometimes think that certain members just deduct karma willy nilly and just for a laugh sometimes.

Maybe, if you are subjected to say -10 or more that admin can be asked to look into whether that member has been targeted by someone/others

I can name at least 3 or 4 very good posters who have negative karma. I just think the whole thing is pointless. It's negatives far out way it's positives.

I've just turned mine on to check a few things out. Barring a few notable exceptions and discounting the moderating team, the majority of regular posters has theirs turned off. What does that tell us?

Precisely. I think the system is a good one but I am also aware that for admin to check may well be time consuming.

But if someone is abusing the system then they should have the right to give karma out taken away from them

I don't want to name the individuals, of course.

But it was fairly obvious that there +karma was getting consideratly higher. Especially with one of them starting off with minus karma, and then there karma increasing by a lot over a couple of days.

Not sure if this has been mentioned by perhaps when you give someone a +karma or -karma you have to give a suitable reason why you gave it to them?
But then theres the time consuming job of reading all the reasons.

I see I'm only 4 away from zero. Come on people it's only four clicks of the mouse. There must be forum members chomping at the bit to reduce mine. Come on, get some.

The fact is the system does not work. It's as plain and as simple as that. A year ago I was bothered but now I actually salute those who have high karma. Well done you've obviously earned it.

I still maintain that, among regular forum members, a very high majority have it turned off. What does that tell us? We should start a poll. If we did I have abolutely no doubt most people would vote that the karma system is a waste of time and thats the only point I really need to make.

If anyone started a poll it would probably be locked by the mods. There have been many karma based threads locked. Secondly, I dont think anyone would take any notice anyway. The mods have given us the option to turn it off and just about every regular forum member has used that option. That speaks volumes, that says it all..

I've now got mine switched on to show that. Start a thread or bump an old one and I'll post my views on the subject. Theres no point in trying to discredit the system because one, I dont see the mods actually getting rid of it and two, the fact that just about everybody has theirs turned off makes my point much better than I ever could.

EDIT: BTW I agree with Dans assessment of the system. It IS a sneaky way of taking a pop at others.
