[A UPS airplane engine was seen ripping off
a wing and flying through the air just moments
before the jet crashed in a fireball and
killed 14 in Kentucky.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)
released a preliminary report on Thursday
of the devastating November 4
incident that killed three crew members
onboard the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 plane
and 11 people on the ground.
Terrifying images included in the report showed
the UPS Flight 2976 taking off from
Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport
as a giant fire broke out and one of
the plane's three engines detached.
It remains unclear why the engine separated.
The report outlined how it detached
from the pylon - the part that connects the engine
to the wing - as the plane roared down
the runway while taking off.
According to the NTSB investigation,
a fire started on the left engine while
it moved 'above the fuselage and
subsequently impacted the ground'.
Photos released show flames emerging
a few seconds after the engine detached,
suggesting the fire may have been
a result of the detached engine striking
a fuel-filled wing.]
