Several people have been killed and others injured when an explosion ripped through a bar in the luxury Alpine ski resort town of Crans-Montana, Swiss police said early on Thursday.

“There has been an explosion of unknown origin,” Gaetan Lathion, a police spokesperson in Wallis canton in southwestern Switzerland, told AFP.

“There are several injured, and several dead.”

He said the explosion took place at about 1:30am (0030 GMT) in a bar called Le Constellation, which is popular with tourists, as revellers rang in the new year.

The BBC also reported that several people were killed and others injured in the blast, citing police.

What we know so far

Police have confirmed that “several dozen” people have died in the explosion, with around 100 injured.

The Italian foreign ministry have said information from Swiss police suggested about 40 deaths, but police were not more specific than “dozens” at the press conference.

At around 1.30am local time, smoke was noted at the bar and emergency services were called. Fire and police patrols “rapidly reached the site”.

There were several hundred people affected by the blast, and from many different nationalities, officials have said. They said it will take time to uncover who has been killed and injured, and where they are from, with many nationalities likely to have been involved.

Firefighters have been mobilised from across the entire region, officials said.
Many victims have “severe burns”, officials added. The local hospitals’ intensive care units “are full” and some patients are having to be transferred to hospitals in other cantons for urgent care.

There is no suggestion that this was a terrorist attack, police confirmed.

The area has been completely closed off, and a no-fly zone has been imposed over Crans-Montana, police said in a statement.

A police official told this morning’s press conference that everyone involved in the operation is “stunned” by this “painful moment”.

[b]Dozens presumed dead in fire at new year party in Swiss resort

Swiss police have said “several tens of people” are presumed dead and about 100 are injured, most of them seriously, following a fire at a bar in an Alpine resort during a new year celebration.

The incident occurred at around 1.30am local time on Thursday in Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, 25 miles north of the Matterhorn.

Police said they cannot yet be more precise about fatalities as investigations continue at the scene and attempts are made to identify the victims and inform their families.

Local officials said the cause of the fire is not yet known but they have ruled out any kind of attack. Experts have not yet been able to go inside the building.

Officials called the blaze an “embrasement generalise” – a firefighting term describing how a blaze can trigger the release of combustible gases that can then ignite violently.

Helicopters and ambulances rushed to the scene to assist victims, including some from different countries.

The injured are so numerous that the intensive care unit and operating theatre at the regional hospital has quickly hit full capacity, local officials said.

In a region busy with tourists skiing on the slopes, the authorities have called on the local population to show caution in the coming days to avoid any accidents that could require medical resources that are already overwhelmed.

Speaking at a press conference in the hours after the incident, head of the regional government Mathias Renard said: “This evening should have been a moment of celebration and coming together, but it turned into a nightmare.

Valais Cantonal police commander Frederic Gisler said: “We are devastated.”

A reception centre and helpline have been set-up for impacted families.

Pair in Le Constellation think candle may have set fire to ceiling

BREAKING
French nationals Emma and Albane were ringing in the new year at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana when the fire broke out in the early hours of the morning.
The pair tell BFMTV they believe the blaze was the result of a candle being "held too close to the ceiling, which caught fire".
They claim one of the waitresses had put "birthday candles" on top of some champagne bottles, one of which was then held up.
"In a matter of seconds, the entire ceiling was ablaze. Everything was made of wood," they say.
They say the flames "started to rise very quickly", adding that "the entire ceiling was on fire, even the first floor was on fire" as they tried to make their way outside.
Evacuation was "very difficult", Emma and Albane say, because the escape route out of the room they were in was "narrow" and the stairs leading outside were "even narrower".
"We were very lucky," they add, saying there were "about 200 people trying to get out within 30 seconds through some very narrow steps".

“Eyewitnesses speaking to French broadcaster BFM TV said that a barmaid, carried on the shoulders of a barman, held a lit sparkler that set fire to the wooden ceiling.”

…from a CNN article…

Two witnesses have told CNN affiliate BFMTV that the deadly fire in Crans-Montana was caused by sparklers placed in champagne bottles.

“There were waitresses carrying champagne bottles with sparklers on them, and they carried them close to the ceiling, which caused it to catch fire,” one witness said.

“One waitress was standing on another waiter’s shoulders, and the bottle and the flames were just a few centimeters away from the ceiling,” the other added.

“Once the ceiling was on fire, within about ten seconds the entire nightclub was on fire,” the first witness said. “We all ran out screaming and when we turned back, there were flames.”

Both witnesses told the French network that there were at least 200 people inside the establishment.

London has changed, because of the threat of terrorism. Westminster Bridge now has large bollards along it after a jihadi drove at speed into pedestrians killing five on the bridge then stabbed a policeman to death outside the Parliament. Five people were stabbed, two fatally on London Bridge by Jihadis. 7/7 bombs on a bus and in the London Underground. Soldier stabbed and beheaded outside Woolwich barracks in South London. Just a selection of a few incidents taken from many, it's not so rare in London.

if the Fire got a hold near the stairs
many would not be able to pass that.

Also why No Sprinklers working

Sparklers and Sprinklers seem to be the key ingredients to this tragedy

The internet really needs to stop allowing videos to just autoplay. The video clip I saw was horrific. Only heard 3 seconds of it and felt sick to my stomach. It happened with a bondi beach video too.

Obviously this is nothing compared to what all of these people and their families are going through, but something seriously needs to be done about it.

One Fella used his Jumper
to try to put it out.

But he made it worse

It has been described as a Flashover Fire
as the Foam in the roof helped the Fire move fast

Much like it did, the same in the USA, Rhode Island
club fire.
In 2003, 100 people died

Large Photo from their Fire started in 2003

I’ve seen loads of reports and accounts of young people just standing there filming the spreading , ceiling flames on their mobiles and uploading images and clips .. instead of running for their lives !!!!

Maybe incorrect though it sounds feasible

Imagine being in an enclosed basement in a wooden building with a fire starting above your head and thinking that's no cause for concern. I know youth and alcohol play a big part too but social media really is rotting brains by making it everyone's first instinct when disaster strikes to start filming rather than try to help or try to escape

This is a terrible tragedy

They Started the Fire with candles on bottles.

Also the flames went up the stairs that get you out
it was panic of young folks climbing over bodies

Some good fella opened another top exit

So many very young teenagers, in a bar alone. Seems like there are no fire inspections there, and no ID checking.

Avoidable tragedy if only they had taken any notice of health and safety rules, I expect they will face a huge legal challenge by the families of the deceased

Have they actually broken any health and safety rules (bearing in mind it’s Switzerland) apart from the sparklers? Surely they would have had inspections over the years for the building that would have flagged up if so?

They say they have been inspected, but one exit out? and then we don't know if there were a cap on the numbers that should have been in the bar

I read a report today the male owner had previously been jailed for fraud, kidnapping ad pimping, health and safety might not be his top priority
