everything is going to jump in price, it's the perfect excuse
everything is going to jump in price, it's the perfect excuse
Yeah
Never to return to normal either
How does that work
The government could spend a load of money trying to shield people from it which is fine but then it'll just mean we end up having to pay for that over the following years so it just delays or elongates the financial misery. They should also be real with people and encourage them to control their budgets and don't drive so much if possible but then they also want people to be out there spending and commuting to work to keep city centres afloat so it's a catch 22
there is no right way to deal with it. Those in financial trouble now are going to be stuffed without assistance. If we get into goods in the shops getting scarce, we will have panic buying again. It will be like covid without the stay home restrictions all over again.
If Trump carries out his threat to knock out power stations and iran ecalate again we are in for a whole lot of pain that may take a decade to recover from

lol the government could care less they are raking in the moula from the increase in fuel prices
look out for yourself and your family and friends would be my advice dont depend on the government, cut back on your energy use where you can they cant charge you for what you have not used
There is so much the government could do right now, taking VAT off heating energy would be a start
they are not going to do anything, they are just holding a meeting to make it look like they give a toss

Its going to be interesting to see what they come up with, if its anything like the help for people who heat their homes with oil, they may as well not bother

Sounds like they are no rush ...it's Spring there is no urgency and likely to be targeted...
After attending an emergency Cobra meeting on Monday, the Chancellor Rachel Reeves will tell MPs tomorrow that the government is creating a new anti-profiteering framework to protect people from unfair price rises in the wake of the conflict in the Middle East.
It's after senior ministers, including the prime minister, chancellor and energy secretary, attended a meeting of the government’s emergency Cobra committee today to discuss the war’s impact on the cost of living.
Downing Street said the new framework would help regulators like the Competitions and Markets Authority (CMA) to root out price gouging.

So they are basically doing nothing at all

More than 60% of the price we pay for fuel is tax. Maybe she could consider giving some back? I mean, we buy fuel with money we've already been taxed on. It's a racket...

New
[The £150 reduction on costs starts from April 1, 2026,
aimed at reducing electricity and gas bills.
Why: The government is reducing bills
by cutting funding for the
Energy Company Obligation (ECO)
and reducing costs for the Renewables Obligation.
Who: This reduction is expected to be passed
on to customers by suppliers,
including those on fixed-rate tariffs.]

Rachel spends 15 minutes telling us nothing
What we heard instead was Ms Reeves trotting out a series of previously announced policies - somehow sidetracking to two child benefit and nursery funding when concerns are on energy and fuel. But there were no new plans to deal with a spike in prices.
No wonder the silence in the Commons was deafening - Reeves took 15 minutes to read out an announcement of nothing.
There was no movement on fuel duty, nothing on further support for energy prices, no extra defence spending and nothing on extracting oil and gas from the North Sea.
Not only was there a defiant put down to demands from the Opposition benches but there was also a swipe at Labour MPs.
The chancellor has been under huge pressure from Labour backbenchers and some cabinet ministers to loosen up her rules on borrowing and spending to help deal with the crisis.
But Ms Reeves had a blunt “no” to those pleas.
She told the House that she would be “acting within our iron clad fiscal rules” - so no new borrowing, no flexibility in the rules, just more of the same.
